After recently pulling the head to do the head gasket, I discovered on close inspection, damage to one lobe on the cam and its corresponding lifter.
I've decided it's probably best to refresh the valvetrain.
I will probably get Ideola to sort the camshaft out as I like the idea of the improved stock profile.
The lifters will probably come from Piper (solid).
As for the valve springs I'm not so sure. I have read that standard outer springs are NLA from Porsche, but will double-check.
I've obviously missed out on the group-buy a couple of years back, so are there any alternatives ie. other suppliers or uprated springs that are suitable?
I would have liked to put standard springs back as I don't like the idea of increasing the poundage if it's not necessary, but maybe I have no choice? _________________ 1979 UK 932 |

If you're going with a non-stock cam, it might not hurt to upgrade the valve springs. Extra piece of mind to allow you to rev a bit higher, and make use of that cam. _________________ [This Space For Rent] |

Keep me updated on your plans and findings. My head (and engine) is currently at Maynard Engines for a strip down and chemical clean over Christmas. Once we know the state of it then I'll know how much money to throw at it.
A mild to wild rebuild is still being considered. _________________ 1980 931 - forged pistons, Piper cam, K27/26 3257 6.10 hybrid turbo, 951 FMIC, custom intake, Mittelmotor dizzy & cam pulley, H&S exhaust, GAZ Gold, Fuch'ed, Quaife

@Flosho - the cam I was thinking about was the improved stock profile that Dan offers. I'm not particularly interested in increasing the revs as the car is for road use only and reliability is a prime concern to me. I was more interested in the possible small torque increase the cam offers below 3500rpm.
Using stronger springs with a stock cam would sap power and possibly cause extra wear on seats etc.
I may still need to use stronger springs though...
@Carrera RSR - Unfortunately the outer valve springs are definitely NLA from Porsche; I checked this morning.
Camshafts from Porsche are £323+VAT.
Followers/lifters as most people know are horrendously expensive from Porsche - £54+VAT Each!! Errr no thankyou
Solid lifters are a viable option for me as I have access to many surface-grinders at work so grinding shims/lashcaps to size would be a piece of cake.
If I find out more I'll update you. _________________ 1979 UK 932 |

Initial thoughts on my head were that the cam and followers looked in good nick and should be reusable once cleaned up, ported and flowed.
I would like to go for a warmer cam etc. but we shall see what the quote is to rebuild once everything is measured up in Jan. _________________ 1980 931 - forged pistons, Piper cam, K27/26 3257 6.10 hybrid turbo, 951 FMIC, custom intake, Mittelmotor dizzy & cam pulley, H&S exhaust, GAZ Gold, Fuch'ed, Quaife
