I got to talking to a guy about my windshield. In other topics I'd mentioned that the seal on my windshield is leaking and letting water int he cabin. It's been raining pretty hard here in Seattle this week, and the water is becoming even more of a problem than usual. So I got to talking to an auto glass guy about repairing the windshield. This shop does not want to fool with trying to save the glass, they want to just replace the whole thing. That sticks in my craw because there's nothing wrong with the glass, just with the weather seal! So I'm still looking for a shop that will save the glass, just take it out, clean it and put it back in a new seal. Anyway, one of the things he said was that this needs a gasket, not just a tube of silicone. is that true? is there a post somewhere that describes the procedure of taking out, cleaning and preparing and then replacing the windshield with new silicone/gasket/weather seal? What should I be looking for and asking for?

BTW, I'm not talking about the hatch. That's another headache that I'm in discussions with Rasta about. Hang on Rasta, I'll have something for you to see in a week or so.

Be careful and DIY.

Remember whoever does it to remove the locators at the bottom of windscreen. They will instantly crack the screen if they are there as you lift it out. They create a pressure point.

I remove the interior trim around the glass to avoid damage to it first.

I just use a broken hacksaw blade and cut out a corner till I could feed the wire thru then i cut it with wire.
Keep removing the old sealant from the wire or it will bind up.

I then gently force it out with my legs while sitting in the seats!

It is a PITA but straight forward to do.

Only use non acidic sealant when re installing.
