We sold our dog-hauler, the Jeep Grand Wagoneer, and immediately wished we hadn't, well, sort of. Fuel mileage between states, 1400 miles was expensive. So, we've been looking at mid-'80s Mercedes Diesels, and we found one. Rust free Arizona car, 1986 300SDL. 270K miles on car, 160K miles on '87 engine, which I guess has a better head.

Anyway, we didn't pay much, but the car came with a 1975 Mercedes 450SL. Also, a rust free Arizona car, but with faded white paint. Nice red interior, and most of the electrical gadgets work. Radio is way cool, old AM/FM radio with cassette. Push this bar, and the unit searches for stations. But, not digital, the old-style little vertical bar moves back and forth. Car works great, has D-Jet electronic fuel injection. Quite the dog on the highway though, if anyone has any hints on performance mods, I'm all ears.
Here's a shot of the SDL:

hey Dan, we're bringing it back to Wisconsin, hopefully. If Pam doesn't like it as much as she thought, it will be available! She spent all day yesterday just cleaning the inside, huge improvement. And, she has half the outside paint back to a normal shine with rubbing compound. I drank beer and watched!

Dave I think you should go into business finding good clean southern cars for us northerners. Might not make a living, but it might put a dent in your beer tab

They're certainly out there, most are not advertised. Would take a lot of driving around of course!

Nice Merc's!

Still a pretty popular classic, as I understand it.

Wheeler Dealers did an episode on 'em. Good fun.

great cars,

the(W126) was the first Mercedes S-Klasse with a Diesel engine. It wasnt sold in europe and it will be pretty rare over here.

The Sl (W109) is more common and is selling arround the 10grand over here in good driving condition. The coupe is much less wanted and cheaper.

Enjoy,

Nobbi

OMG, that was funny! Ours is in 'uber' better shape than the one he bought. Guess for the 'merican market, value is much more depressed for these cars, ours was 1/6th the price he paid. I bow to my knees and thank the Earth (and Manifest Destiny) for the State of Arizona~!

That's okay we're jealous of you Aussies and Kiwi's for some of the cooler cars you've gotten.
