Hi
Just in the process of replacing the cam belt on my 1981 turbo. When i removed the cover the crank mark was 2 teeth off the oil pump mark, with the cam mark aligned ? Does the crank pulley (viewed from above/front) rotate clockwise or anti clockwise? |

IIRC, crank pulley always pulls the "long" run of a timing belt (not the run with the tensioner). _________________ Toofah King Bad

Sure you spotted the right cam mark? The right mark should be found on the drivers side of the cam wheel, not from the front bumber side. Just a thought because there are other marks on cam wheel too. _________________ Mikko

So that's clockwise from the front ?
I've done other timing belts and always thought clockwise was the way, however the 'haynes' (page 32) says 'in the direction of the engine rotation - counterclockwise' ?
Ideally I could have quickly turned the engine over with the key to check but not without the cam belt on! |

Not sure now you've said that!
I could only see a notch mark across the edges of the crank pulley which was highlighted with White paint? |

Clockwise looking at it. Counterclockwise from the driverseat, more correct way to describe it. Right is right and so on. _________________ Carl Fredrik Torkildsen

And to clarify the above regarding the timing mark on the cam sprocket, it is a common mistake of previous owners to put the cam sprocket on backward. The sprocket has timing mark "dimples" on both sides of it. What you should notice, however, is that one side of the sprocket is "deeper" than the other, and has the VW/Audi logo on it, along with some other lettering. This side of the sprocket should face toward the BACK of the car, not the front, and it is the timing mark that is on the same side as the lettering that should be used to line up with the pointer on the cam cover. _________________ erstwhile owner of just about every 924 variant ever made |

Hi
I am sure ive got the right cam pulley mark, it's the crank pulley thats not clear. There is a faint 'notch' on the outside edge (ie top) of the crank pulley with a white paint mark to highlight it, is this the mark that should line up with the raised pointer on the oil pump housing ? I have a photo but don't know how to upload it. |

Yes, the notch can be very hard to see / feel, but it sounds like you've identified it correctly. _________________ erstwhile owner of just about every 924 variant ever made |

Crank pulley notch is worthless, use the flywheel mark. _________________ Toofah King Bad

Hi
I have located the timing window on the flywheel but what do the marks look like? |

cam wheel -
flywheel (first line-up the cranks' front pulley-pointer mark to get you close, then look at the flywheel window) -
For '81-up 931, "Z1" indicates TDC -
crank pulley-pointer -
