Hey folks,

I'm finally at the point in my restoration where I need to begin putting the exhaust back together. Currently, the exhaust system is in pretty bad shape and I need to buy all new gaskets and seals. Is there a kit out there or do I have to buy each seal and gasket individually?

Sunset has everything you need. I would order new hardware as well.

Should I take it to Sunset and have them install?

Ha, the last guy there who knew how to work on a 931 is dead!

What are you trying to refresh? Everything from the head to the tailpipe or something in between? My recent wastegate refresh HOW TO covered some of the parts needed. I'd consider some coatings and splicing in some flex sections as well. . .

Not really trying to refresh anything, really. I have the exhaust down pipe and waste gate sitting on the floor of my garage and I am left with two problems:

A. I don't have the gaskets or seals needed to put the exhaust system back together

B. I do not have the tools or know-how to put the exhaust system back together.

I called and got a quote from Sunset Porsche over in Beaverton and compared them to the prices for the same parts over at Pelican. I decided to buy the parts from Pelican, but I just got an email from them saying it will cost a fortune to have the gaskets shipped over from Germany.

At this point since I already have the down pipe and waste gate, couldn't I just take the car to a local exhaust shop and have them put the system on with generic gaskets? I mean, exhaust gaskets are just exhaust gaskets, right?

So, the manifold is on the car, with the turbo attached to it? You therefore only need to attach j-pipe, wastegate, downpipe, cat section, and rear section?

I may have some of the gaskets you need. I would strongly advise AGAINST letting an exhaust shop touch your car. . .this is mechanical work, requiring someone who knows what they are doing, and who will use proper fasteners, proper torques, and proper anti-seize compounds. There are also a number of heat shields that need to go in along the way, and your missing control line (with banjo bolt and sealing rings).

If you want me to roll over there and assess your situation, let me know.

That is correct, basically all that is left to be done regarding the exhaust system is, attaching the down pipe to the turbo, attaching the bypass pipe to the waste gate, and the waste gate to the down pipe.

I've ordered the banjo bolt that fits into the waste gate, I just need the seals, the control line, and the metal connector to the intake manifold.

If you want to roll over here and check out the situation, I could totally use the help

The gaskets should be able to be had from EBSracing. At ebsracing.com. If they are not listed on the site, call.

http://www.ebsracing.com/ShopByVehicle.epc?q=1981-PORSCHE-924--/l4_2.0l_turbo&yearid=1981%40%401981&makeid=PORSCHE%40%40PORSCHE%40%40X&engineid=1263282%40%40924+%2FL4%5F2%2E0L%5FTurbo%40%40924&catid=Exhaust+%26+Fuel+Tank&mode=PS

Figure out if you need the seal rings or the flat sandwich gaskets. Do not use both.
