Two questions:
1) What the heck is up with that aluminum-foil looking stuff?
2) Is TIG welding super easy, or are TIG welders just awesome at welding? Those welds look to be works of art! _________________ 78 924 NA

Flosho did you fab that collector yourself? And tom tig welding is defiantly an art form, if you want super easy use a mig welder. _________________ Tangerine Dream- 1980 924 Turbo

I am not responsible for any Fab work, only monetary input. Its impressive work by a semi-local guy that does this on the side! _________________ [This Space For Rent] |

Jason, you ripped out the factory firewall covering right? If so, are you replacing it with anything other than paint? _________________ '83 944 Track car.

Yeah that heat shielding is gone. I'm just going to get some standard heat shield type material.
*edit.. I take that back.. The black stuff that i chipped off is gone and it will just be painted, but the aluminum type stuff by the torque tube tunnel will be replaced..
There really should be a reduction in the amount of heat back there anyways with the turbo and exhaust towards the front of the car. _________________ [This Space For Rent] |

If your referring to the aluminum foil stuffed into the pipes while doing the welding, it is there so that the backs of the welds can be covered with argon through the pipe that's inserted through the foil. Looks like the material is stainless steel unless I'm mistaken.

wow I really like those welds on that collector!
Great job (some local guy did it?). I don't have knowledge of welding, but I like it.
Jaleous. Like your setup with the turbo and stuff... Never crossed my mind to ditch the window washer tank... _________________ "Rule: Turbo's make torque, and torque makes fun." (C. Bell)

Jason,
It is looking great, I am curious to see what you will be doing with the exhaust of the turbo.
Also, I would recommend having the manifold "Kool Coated", or at a minimum ceramic coated. If you do not, then header wrap would be wise.
If you do not, then you will need some stainless or the like shielding between those pipes and the framerail or you will cook the paint right off it.
I would also recommend that you put that manifold in a over before anything else and heat it for an hour to help de-stress it. _________________ 3 928s, |

I was thinking of either purchasing some header wrap or having it ceramic coated and then header wrapping the down pipe.
The turbo will get a turbo blanket or stainless heat shield and I'll probably end up putting the stupid timing belt cover back on. _________________ [This Space For Rent] |

I strongly recommend getting it ceramic coated and NOT using header wrap. If you can't find a local resource to do it, I have one here in Metro Detroit who is really reasonable. _________________ erstwhile owner of just about every 924 variant ever made |
