Okay, so it took a little longer to get started than expected. If all goes to plan I will be starting in the next week. I worked out the finances today. The deal is $750 for it as is and I pay for the parts at cost. My uncle, who owns the shop, helped get it running well three years ago and will assist this time around as well.
In the interior, the driver's side seat has a 4 inch tear down by the small of the driver's back and the dash has a few cracks in it. The rest looks decent.
Other than a few rock chip type dings the car has no visible body damage.
I was told it also needs a new fuel tank as the one it is is rusted. _________________ Drive Fast, but Stay Straight |

Looks like a promising car. Why is it not running? _________________ 87 924s

I wrote it up in another thread but the short story is that the engine is messed up. The current owner's son tried to race a Boxster on the highway. It used to be a daily driver. _________________ Drive Fast, but Stay Straight |

Was it a timing belt break? If so it might be worth your time to pull the head and check out the damages. You might have a good lower still. _________________ 87 924s

My uncle and his employee (the current owner) say it needs a new engine. My uncle has been doing this since I was 10 (28 years) so if he says it I am going to tend to believe him, especially since he has no reason to mislead me. _________________ Drive Fast, but Stay Straight |

No intention of dissing your uncle or the current owner, but it would be worthwhile to know *WHY* the engine needs to be replaced. If you haven't already, you're likely to learn the hard way that people make all sorts of generalizations about what these cars need, basing it on conventional (and often irrelevant) wisdom rather than direct experience with this particular platform.
I'm not suggesting your uncle is trying to rip you off. But it's still a fair question, and a learning opportunity for you, to understand WHY the engine needs to be replaced. If it threw a rod, then OK, replace the whole thing. But it's more likely to be a spun bearing or busted timing belt, which doesn't require a whole new engine, just a rebuild of the existing one. _________________ erstwhile owner of just about every 924 variant ever made |

I am going to be involved in the replacement. They know where an engine is available they will pick up and I am going to be asking lots of questions. I am actually going to take vacation to work at the shop on this car. I will start with what is wrong with the old one. I will post back when I know what the problem is. _________________ Drive Fast, but Stay Straight |

Just putting a bug in your ear... if the belt broke and bent a few valves but your pistons and cylinders are good, you can swap heads and save alot of time and labor of pulling that engine. But be aware it is wise to also swap the cam tower even if it appears ok, because the violence of the pistons hitting the valves can cause cam damage. I saw one case where the cam stopped so abruptly that the front cam cog twisted off the end of the shaft. Even with such a grizzly belt failure (it mooshed all 8 valves) the lower engine was fine and is currently running strong. With a new upper of course. _________________ 87 924s
