|

Working on reindexing my torsion bars, it's a '77 so I don't have the adjustments on the spring plate.
I have the three bolts off the axle and the four bolts off from the cover over the end of the torsion bar. The spring plate does not want to budge. Here's a pic I stole off another post, it looks exactly like my car exept I would like my spring plate to be in that position. I though the spring plate would only need to come out past the lip (in the yellow circle) and then it would rotate down. Is the inner bushing somehow attached to the spring plate meaning I would have to pull the spring plate out the thickness of the inner bushing? Do I need to move the rear axle up or down out of the way? Could the torsion bar be stuck at both ends from never being removed in 34 years? Do I just need to get a BFH?
Thanks,
Captain

BFH. The splines can be quite rusted. I never got the t-bars out of my 80 spring plates. . .ended up tossing the whole assembly. _________________ Toofah King Bad

P.S. Having the t-bar free at both ends is REQUIRED to re-index. _________________ Toofah King Bad

I had this same issue last weekend. This is depressing. I used a large bar with a wedge end to try to pry it off, and I think I bent the spring plate a little but only got it to budge a couple mm, and not enough to get over the edge.
On the plus side, I guess nobody's in danger of having the spring plate pop down unexpectedly. _________________ 924 Beginner, messing with suspension. |

Apply HEAT!
Then PB Blaster in mass-quantities
Then apply more HEAT!
rinse, repeat for a couple of days
Just be aware that PB Blaster is flammable and the rubber can and will melt a bit.
You can also cut the end caps off with an appropriate sized hole-saw and then drill/tap the end of the torsion bar to accept a slide hammer. When its all finished, mount the cap onto the end of the torsion bar with a small screw.
This was a procedure used in an old article about prepping a 924 for AutoX and Track driving. They found that being able to reindex much easier was important for the dual-purpose nature of the project and to help fine-tune the setup without the use of coil-over shocks. _________________ Stefan

On first disassembly, we've always had to beat 'em off with a hammer.
Hmm. That doesn't sound right.
Yeah, they do usually stick. _________________ Vaughan Scott
