Hi everyone,

Few words of intro:
After some time, I decided to start a new project (924 v8 ).
I'm fitting Audi's 3.7l V8 engine in my 924.

I stuck with the central tube.
924 Shaft (in my opinion) is too thin to convey so much torque, so I got a 944 central tube from a friend.

However, when I spin the shaft by hand, the bearings are making noise of crumbling.

Has anyone changed the bearings on the central tube (shaft) or by chance know bearing dimensions and how it should be done.

very nice idea...i was wondering how an Audi V8 would fit in the 924

the bearings are standard units..you can buy them very cheap at any bearing store.
for changing them i think you need a big pipe(like water drain but thicker)

but be very careful to how much the shaft comes out of the tube..so you put it back just the way it was.

Thanks for your prompt replay.

Is there a right way of extracting shaft?
ie, which way to fall out, from clutch housing side, or gearbox mounting side?

I'm not familiar with the 944 Transaxle.
Will be looking into replacing my bearings (N/A) this winter, so I'm curious.
Too give you an idea, here's a pic of a 1980 drive train and 016/9 gearbox.

HTH and good luck on your project.

Edit01:
Turbo hints deleted. Thanks mon.
Funny thing though:

Wasn't aware of that one.

There's a very thorough write-up on this over at Clark's Garage.

Harm, that pic shows an Audi transaxle. . .so it is not an 80 Turbo.

how much heavier is that audi v8 compared to the stock engine? is it going to throw the handerling chracteristics?

Its a neat fit thougth sure looks comfortable in there. admire you for your challenging engineering, amazing what a man can do when his wife leaves him.

if the engine is heavier than the stock unit the understeer/oversteer characteristics could be a bit accentuated...but if anything...it will be more tail-happy IMO.

Guys, thanks for the data.
You were more than helpful.

I can not find data on how the V8 engine weight (and don't have how to measure it), but I think that is lighter than the old one.
Stock engine block is made of cast iron while the V8 engine was completely aluminum.

I've just removed my driveshaft to rebuild the torque tube. I bought a 2 meter length of pipe that was slightly smaller OD than the driveshaft (under 25mm) and then spun a brass boss up that fitted snugly over the clutch end of the drive shaft (putting most of the load on the tapered edge), and tightly into the end of the pipe.

Make sure you hold it central as you hammer the shaft out and it should come straight out without moving or damaging the bearings. My bearings are fine, but I'm considering knocking them out with a large OD pipe and replacing with Ceramic, or the expensive "super bearings" mentioned on this site somewhere.

Make sure to measure the location of the front and rear bearing carriers and the length of the shaft at either end before you start moving things around.

I used a large bearing puller attached to the TT carrier, then threaded in a piece of 3/4" all-thread (which threaded into the front of the puller) with double nuts on the threaded rod to gently push the shaft out.

Used a ball hone to gently clean up the inside of the carrier tube.

I used a set of huge washers (the OD of the washer closely matched the ID of the carrier) with a pair of double nuts on the end to push the bearings back in place.

Here's some pictures:

The Porsche spec book lists a N/A engine as 313# and a turbo at 363#

From two guys on the GT40 forum the AUDI v8 weighs between 396 and 429#

The AUDI type 924 transaxle is almost identical to the early 944. The bolt pattern is the same but the input shaft is larger on the 944. (same as the 924 turbo) Si if you have an N/A and you use a 944 torque tube you need the 944 transaxle as well. [/quote]

So moving the battery to the back can help restore the balance a bit. Good information to know

Qky, let us know how your project gets on, I for one am really interested in it.
