i got a 79 two years ago, im almost certain the problem with it is with the fuel, it runs very rich, i once had gas in the oil, ive went through and changed many things on the car like the fuel pump, filter, and distributer, but i still have the same problem too much fuel. the exost comes out black and the spark plugs are wet when the engine dies. the car isnt able to start many times and when it is running it cant go much faster than 15 or 20 mph. any ideas?

Colin,

That is the same symptoms I had on my 928 euro. Turns out the internal o rings in the fuel distibutor were toast/broken/cracked. This allowed system pressure (5+ bar) rather than the normal 3 bar to go to the injectors. Vaughns writeup refers to them as 4 oval shaped o rings. I was able to find some at the local autoparts store. Make sure you get the fuel resistant type.

Dennis

Cool DIY, im doit for two dizzys, now they are well clean but now seeking for orings, I found a set of vinton brown fuel orings at harbor tool for 20 bucks, one question, the orings that go around the cylinder on the lower head, are those originally round or square, I like to replace them but not take them out yet, I found that sumerging the cylinder in chemtool, or similiar name made them expand and after hours they came too a thinner size it seems.

If it works Ill put the rebuild unit in my running car and test it.

This should be moved to the How-To section (so it doesn't get buried in General Discussions).

We should also add a poll to keep tabs on people's success rate. . .reputedly very low for this job.

Here's a nice writeup based on a 928 unit...should be similar, but in particular, the pix are really helpful.

Yeah, I've been reading the threads, and it seems like the success rate is one in three attempts before everything works. I noted in the 928 doc linked above that they actually recommend a specific sealant, Permatex Indian Head Shellac; Sealing seems to be one of the main issues reported.

Dang, yeah this is an old one!

Moved as suggested... probably posted it before we had a How-To section.
