hey guys....not sure if I should post this here or in another part of the forum but here goes.......I've just replaced my water pump but my temperature gauge is going all the way to the limit after about 5-10 min of running at idle....I took it out for a drive and about 5 minutes in, it did the same....any ideas on what the issue might be?
It's a normally aspirated 1977.5.
cheers,
Juha |

Is your thermostat stuck in the closed position. Is the belt tight on the pump. Did you bleed the system after you refilled the radiator ? _________________ '78 924 NA with Collector plate

+1 to datatrain. Make sure no bubbles in the system and everything else. Old worn out thermostat will start getting stuck or not open.
You can drop the thermostat in some almost/not-quite/on-it'swaytoboiling water and see if it GRADUALLY opens. If it doesn't, your thermostat isn't opening. _________________ - 1977 Porsche 924 2.0 N/A (Trackday Project)

thanks for the quick responses...I'll try these tips asap and report back when done...I wonder if this has anything to do with my 'hot start' problem?!? The car starts on the first turn every time when it's nice and cool but requires some effort after running for awhile.... |

will do...these are great suggestions and inline with my thinking....it's strange that it just started happening....got the water pump replaced, put maybe 100 miles on it in the coming weeks...then it sat for 2 or so weeks while I was away and all of a sudden, I turned it over, let it run and you could see the guage go into the red.... |

Did you make sure to fill the block before popping the thermostat in? You'll never get enough coolant into the system just by filling the overflow tank with a cold engine and closed thermostat.
And check out the points stated above.
Also, a very lean mixture leads to overheating, too. _________________ '84 944 - kid blew motor

thanks for the advice....it's greatly appreciated. The Water Pump was professionally installed so I hope they did all the usual necessary things.
the battle continues....I will hopefully get to it this week. |

I would assume NOTHING, regardless of how reputable the shop may be. You need to verify ALL assumptions, including the t-stat installation. _________________ erstwhile owner of just about every 924 variant ever made |

very true indeed. Especially with these cars. I'll go through a check list of items to trouble shoot based on all the good advice and see how we do... |
