Tie rods for early toofahs - 477 419 803 B
  • NA up to chassis 92DN4 02093
  • Turbo up to chassis 93DN1 00185
  • Female threaded outer TRE
  • NLA
Tie rods for CGT - 944 347 033 00
  • Female threaded outer TRE
  • Same rack as 931
  • Same knuckles as four wheel disk toofah, early 944
  • NLA
Tie rods for late toofahs, early 944s - 944 347 033 01
  • Male threaded outer TRE
  • Listed as superceded for early toofah, early 944
This hurts my head! Is there any way to end up with a female threaded TRE? WHY, you ask? For one, compatibility with Elephant Racing's Thuper Thexthy Bump Steer mod.

Yar!!!

Seems like a Rabbit tie-rod would work.

BTW, here's the part cross-reference for an outer tie-rod on an 80 924 Turbo from Rockauto.com:

BMW 323I (1978 - 1982)
PORSCHE 924 (1979 - 1980)
PORSCHE 944 (1981 - 1982)
VOLKSWAGEN CADDY PICKUP (1982 - 1992)
VOLKSWAGEN GOLF (1976 - 1983)
VOLKSWAGEN JETTA (1979 - 1984)
VOLKSWAGEN SCIROCCO (1975 - 1989)
VOLKSWAGEN TRANSPORTER (1979 - 1992)
VOLVO 340 (1984 - 1991)
VOLVO 360 (1983 - 1989)

The other parts are similar. Unfortunately, no one carries the inner tie-rod.

O'reilly auto parts has inner tie rods for the 80 Jetta for $50

http://www.oreillyauto.com/site/c/search/Tie+Rod+End/03448/C0203.oap?make=Volkswagen&model=Jetta&year=1980&vi=1282643

I have noticed that they do carry quite a lot of stuff for oddball and older cars. I've sourced some Alfa and Audi bits I was unable to find at other places.

Odd that there is no cross-reference between the VW parts and the Porsche 924 on the inner tie-rod.

Rockauto has the same inner tie-rod for about $12:

http://www.rockauto.com/catalog/moreinfo.php?pk=1340000

But you have to pay for shipping and wait for it to arrive, so you pay a little more for the store front and instant gratification

Speed costs money, how fast you wanna go is directly related to how much money is spent.

Note: this doesn't mention anything about fun, since having fun can be had for free

examples: 24 Hours of Le Mans = expensive to race and win. 24 Hours of Lemons = much cheaper to race and win. Champ Car Racing is expensive and ChumpCar Racing is cheap. All of them can be insanely fun...

I was going to say, the tie rod ends that I just bought and installed for the 941 in order to bolt up power steering rack (taken from a 944) were early offset tie rods, and had female threaded outer TRE, early offset length. I've never seen a male threaded TRE.

Then I realized the issue is with the power vs. non-power racks. D'oh. Interesting conundrum. Have you contacted ER to see if they can make a version with male threaded TREs?

This eBay reseller appears to have early style tie rod sets:

Also just found this less expensive alternative to the ER kit:

{EDIT}
Even cheaper if you buy direct:

I've got both Toofah and VW components of the suspension/steering as extra parts on the shelf ATM:
I will exchange them to see how it fits etc.

So the inner tie-rods are the same as a 1980 Jetta? I hope so, otherwise they're so damn expensive.

Ah, you mean female threaded where the tie rod end connects to the knuckle, or a hole like a helm joint, not where the tie rod end interfaces with the tie rod.

I guess you want to find a heim joint, where you can put a bolt through the business end, that has female threads to screw into the inner tie rod assembly if such a correct female part exisits.

Otherwise this hybrid using a Toyota part looks interesting.
