Whose red 924S is that with the Design 90 wheels and the neat front air dam? I'd really like to see more pics of the air dam and info as to where it was acquired!

The pics on the top left are taken directly from the 924.org front page picture.
Vaughan usually uses the pics from the register.
If you "head over to 924.org" (link above), go to the register and click the 86-88 link, scroll down and there it is. |

This may seem like a dumb question, but how do you know that's an S? Other than the rims, I didn't think there were any other external differences between the S and the older 924.
As I write this and stare at the picture, it occurs to me that it must be the passenger side mirror. |

I don't know how you can tell by the mirrors. I was just guessing that that was how you could tell them apart. I couldn't remember what the mirrors look like on a 924. A lot of the ones I've seen had no passenger side mirror. But I've been paying attention since yesterday, and it looks like even the mirrors are the same. So I think there is no way to tell a 924S from a 924 just by looking, if you discount the wheels. |

Here's how you can kinda tell. The '76-'78 924's in North America had the small mirrors (non-electric) and the exposed gascap. So that's easy enough. The '79 924's got the electric mirrors, but still had the exposed gascap. The '80-'82 924's had the covered gascap, like the 924S, and the electric mirrors, but they have the rubber mudflap behind the rear wheels. The 924S doesn't have the mudflaps. So, chances are, it's a 924S. Not 100%, since people add/remove things from their cars, but it's a pretty good way to tell.

While the car in question has been identified as a 924S, it is important to remember that cars originally sold in different markets (countries) were sold with different trim (detail) levels. Most cars sold in GB came with upgraded trim. Cars sold in 80 and later do not all have power mirrors, power windows, or rear splash guards. The 82 Porsche Sales Booklet has a 924 NA with manual mirrors and no splash guards. Splash guards were not standard equipment for the NA market. And no, my 87 924S does not have splash guards, while my 81 Weissach Special Edition came with them as part of the special package. |
