everything was going good until i hit the grape vine... then i forgot how much of a lump of gutless crap that n/a engine is... was floored in 4th the whole time mostly just to keep it above 65
then got down there and broke both V belts... i noticed the battery light come on and glanced at the coolant gauge and saw it was rising so i pulled off the highway as quickly as i could into a gas station parking lot...
it was there i made a waterpump belt out of a single lace from one of my work boots i just so happened to have.... worked great, lasted me 6 miles to the nearest store and its still usable, albeit a little dirty.
$9 later i had a new belt, and the only tool i had with me is the 13mm wrench. i also figured out what this clanking noise was coming from... i thought it was a loose heat shield vibrating around, but its the fins of my alternator hitting the alt bracket as it spins. (where can i get new bushings?)
then we drove home... im averaging about 340-350 on a full tank (13.5gal used) which comes out to about 25-26mpg... does that seem normal? |

Good save, good thing you watch the gauges.
I would say that is pretty good gas mileage, especially with pulling the grapevine. Fun drive. _________________ 81 Porsche 924

I get an average of about 30mpg (plus: 500ml or 1pt of oil every 1600miles)
32-35mpg on a run (with a 5 speed box) but, everything under the bonnet is in good order _________________ 924 (84) N/A 2 ltr - 5 Speed - BLACK - Project (looking for 200BHP, any ideas!)

What year is your car? 4 Speed or 5 Speed? My 95hp 4 speed in 3rd gear pulls up to 130ish km/h so if ur having problems pulling 65mph id say check ur ignition system or do a compression test / leakdown. Im not familiar with the grap vine, is it some serious up hill driving?

check your timing, something migth be really of.
Bushings can be found at porsche, not expensive. Although i made on of the bushes out of aluminium to be able to get the rigth tension, even with new bushes. The design isnt so clever....
25mpg in my n/a equals lots of right foot pedal travel. On highway 120-130km/h its much better. _________________ 1980 924 Turbo

A post office operated at Grapevine from 1923 to 1960.[2]
Grapevine is located at the foot of a road grade known as the Grapevine through Tejon Pass in the Tehachapi Mountains at the southern end of the San Joaquin Valley along Interstate 5 (formerly U.S. Route 99). The village consists mainly of roadside services. The village and grade are named, not for the once-winding road that used to climb the steep mountain pass, but for the wild grapes that still grow along the original road. The grade was infamous for its high accident rate before the road was straightened and widened. The road is still occasionally closed due to heavy snowfall during winter storms. As the Grapevine is the major route between Northern and Southern California, any closure is a major disruption to traffic along the West Coast.
Above is from wikipedia.
It aint no alp du'ez(sp?)(opps try Alp d'Huez) but it is a good pull. And a pretty drive.
I have my own stories about the grapevine that rival the old "hot rod lincoln" song. _________________ 81 Porsche 924

And someone doesn't realise that the first Yank-delivered toofahs had about 25% less power than the rest of the world cars... _________________ '80 924 Turbo |

Didn't they get speedometers that only went to 80mph, extra big bumpers, a higher stock ride hight, emission control, seatbelt warning lights, and side mounted reflectors too? I'm sure Gerry held out on other stuff too, like the right pistons??
Oh and the highest available octane rated "Gasoline" (91 AKI / 95 RON) in the US is the same as the lowest available octane rated "Petrol" in the UK.
Our Ultimate Unleaded is (98 AKI / 102 RON)

The US cars also had 85 mph speedos, with "55" in bright orange on the speedo.....to remind the people what the speed limit was. Man that was a messed up speed limit.....going 55 on a highway system that was as good as you'd find in Germany.

"55" in bright orange ?, hmmm... just in case you forgot
Edit: If i had had one of those speedometers it would have broke by now, (But remember guys I never break the speed limit... well apart from once... it was 1st Sept 2007...but i got a ticket for that one moment of madness) _________________ 924 (84) N/A 2 ltr - 5 Speed - BLACK - Project (looking for 200BHP, any ideas!)
