Only ten miles from home is a 928 engine (that is complete and was running when pulled) for sale for $500. Thats how much I paid for my whole running 924. Anyone shoe-horned one into a 924 before? Ignore my naivity but wouldn't the clutch and drive line hook up the same, or close to it, since the tranny is also in the rear.
Just a thought before it gets away.

Chev V8's have been put into 944's with great success. But from what I've heard....the Porsche 928 V8's are a wider V8.....the V in the Porsche V8 is actually a different degree making the engine lower in height but wider in width. I have always thought dropping a 32 valve 928 V8 into the 924/944 series of cars would be pretty cool, but I think it would be a major undertaking requiring some serious engine compartment mods in the 924.
Also buying the engine is useless as you will also need all the engine management goodies to make it run. From what I heard the best way to do an engine swap is to grab all the engine computers etc and move the whole works into the final car. That way.....the V8 engine still thinks it is sitting in the original donor car.
Also the 928 is a 3200lb to 3600lb car......you'd have to beef up the front end suspension on a 924 with wider tires as well if you want a V8 924 to handle well. _________________ 1981 931 (Canadian car)

There was a project by the young apprectices at the Porsche factory......I guess these might have been the guys in the prototype dept. The President or CEO of Porsche had them make him a special car. They took a 298 without a body. So this 928 platform had everything except the body, then they took a VW Dasher body and cut it down the middle lengthwise. The Dasher body was widened 9".....hood, roof, windhsield etc. Then the Dasher body was dropped over the 928 platform. From the outside it looked liked a Dasher.......but the interior was all 928. On the Autobahn it was much more than a Dasher. He use to bomb around in this thing and leave people in his dust. He did the same thing a few years earlier when he had them drop a 930 drivetrain into a VW Super Beetle.
I see no reason you couldn't cut a 924 down the middle....widen it and put that over a 928 platform. Sure it would take years to do and cost a fortune.......but you'd have the coolest 924 ever.
BTW....these same guys at Porsche also built a 4 door 928 for the old mans birthday. It seems old man Porsche always showed up for work in a Mercedes limo and this bugged them. At the time Porsche didn't have a 4 door car.....so they made a 4 door 928. I guess it was the precursor of the Panamerica.
So....take a 924 body....widen it and drop it over a 928 platform. Considering the price of 924s and 928s these days the project would be fairly cheap........if you could do it yourself.

I guess with time and money, anything is possible. The 928 and 924 engine & tranny layout would be the closest. Every other car built has the tranny attached to the backside of the engine, then a drive shaft, and a rear differential. My mind can't wrap around the work it would take to keep the 924 tranny in place with a different engine.

Yup....I remember hearing about the 930 powered Vanagon made by the Porsche factory boys. Apparently the Vanagon parts vehicle used by Porsche as a parts vehicle for hot weather testing down in Morocco couldn't keep up with the test cars on the drive down there from Germany. So the boys at Porsche beefed up the Vanagon with a 930 drivetrain. Apparently it kept up much better after that.
Dropping a 928 engine in a 924 would blow apart the 924 tramsmission in short order I'm sure. My '90 928 GT packs 330 hp and although it isn't the most powerful motor on the planet.......it does pack a fair amount of "giddy-up". _________________ 1981 931 (Canadian car)

This is the smaller and lighter 240hp version. Shorter transaxle mated to a CNC-machined adapterplate. closedgeared 944 box. New enginemounts. Crossmember/sump, brakecylinder and steeringrack need some attention. The difference in weight isnīt bad. Some 40 kg according to the builder.For sale in Sweden by the way and cheap. The add:

Someone in Sweden has tried to shove a 928 engine into a 924 or 944. The picture is inverted, I don't have the software to correct it.
