Hi all,
My first How-To write up, but I think everyone will find it usefull.
When it comes to removing the water pump, ignore the haynes manual completly. It has a very good description on how to make the job a whole lot harder!
First up:
Drain the coolant from the lower pipe on the radiator and remove the hoses that are connected to the waterpump.
Remove the belt by loosening the bottom nut on the alternator and sliding it right. Once the belt is off, continue to unmount the alternator. You will need to do this to get enough space to slide the waterpump out. Just be careful to support it or undo the wires. (If you do make sure you remember where all of them go)
Next remove the pulley from the waterpump. This is held by 3 bolts. It can also be a job which removes skin as they tend to suddenly come loose. A small trick to get remove the bolts on the pulley that I found works pretty well is to stand by the rhs of your engine bay and hold one bolt with a spanner, put a decent sized rachet on the next bolt (CW) and give it what you've got. It will come loose. Do not remove it yet. Now work repeat the same but remove the bolt which you used to hold the pulley in place to remove the last bolt. Once that one has budged. Tighten the first bolt slightly and loosen the last one. Now that they have all been freed, you should be able to get the bolt which you have just tightened by up-doing the last one loose pretty easily.
Now you should have pretty good access to the bolts holding the waterpump in place. When removing the waterpump bolts be sure to remember which bolt goes where. They are different lenghts and thicknesses. It saves time when it comes to re-installation.
After all the bolts are removed, a gentle pull and it will come loose from the block. Slide it left (when standing infront of the car) and you can ease it out.
And your done! Much quicker than the method in the haynes, and it wont take you more than 20-30 minutes.
Installation is reverse of removal, but be sure to clean both surfaces and use a good gasket sealer between the block/gasket/waterpump.
Another small caution, after re-filling the coolant be sure to bleed the system of any air leaks. After you have the coolant in bleed the system by removing the small plug in the water pipe at the top of the engine. With the engine running water will soon come up to the plug hole, once it has, push the plug back into place, secure it and grab a beer for your hard work!

Great mate.
I have always found you can loosen the bolts on the pump pulley before removing the belt a lot easier. _________________ Porsche 924 1984 (UK import) NA

Great!
It's not necessary to remove the timing belt, is it? _________________ Porsche 924 NA Euro. |
