Hi all. My 87 924S with 42,xxx miles on it seems to have a chattering clutch. At idle, with the window down, in neutral, I hear the chatter. When I put the clutch in, the chatter dissapears. What is the cause and solution to this? There are no misshifts, it always engages each gear very nicely.

What you are experiencing is not known as "chattering". A "chattering clutch" is one that engages and disengages with bumpy feedback that you feel through the clutch pedal. Kinda like stepping on the brakes with warped brake rotors.

The noise that you hear is most likely the Torque Tube Bearings. The shafts that drive our cars (924/944/924S/951/968) are always spinning when the engines are running, unless the clutch is engaged. The bearings wear, and get old. When you step on the clutch, and the shaft does not spin, so no noise.
