Okay, Iv'e narrowed it down. I want to go for either a 944 listed here:
http://www.autotrader.com/fyc/vdp.jsp?ct=u&car_id=262781350&dealer_id=1061528&car_year=1985&rdm=1243148934291&model=&num_records=25&systime=&make2=&highlightFirstMakeModel=&start_year=1981&keywordsfyc=&keywordsfyc=&keywordsrep=&keywordsrep=&engine=&certified=&body_code=0&fuel=&awsp=false&search_type=used&distance=300&marketZipError=false&search_lang=en&showZipError=y&make=POR&keywords_display=&color=&page_location=findacar%3A%3Aispsearchform&min_price=&drive=&default_sort=priceDESC&seller_type=b&max_mileage=&style_flag=1&sort_type=priceDESC&address=68701&advanced=&end_year=2010&doors=&transmission=&max_price=&cardist=253&standard=false&rdpage=thumb

or a 928, which I am looking at here:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=220414971271&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWAX%3AIT&viewitem=
I would be searching for a different 928 if I did not win the bid.

I want a 944 because I love the sport-style look to it, and the wheels sparkle in my eyes. This one listed is indeed in fantastic condition and at a great price.

However I tend to like a stock 928 more for the nice roaring engine and it's amazing look as well.

What would be a better choice? Going for a 944 or 928!?

928 has way lower miles. More of a rare car also, 944's are everywhere.

You should really get on Rennlist or the Pelican boards if you haven't already. They have very active forums specifically for the 944 and 928. While some folks here own those cars, there just aren't as many of us as on a dedicated forum.

Based only on what I've read and heard, you should ask around those forums mentioned by Chrenan about the typical cost of maintenance items and frequency of those items. Of course, if that isn't a factor for you, then I'd probably go for a 928 myself just because I've never owned one.

Yeah reading the reports of others can help with the maintenance / administrative / budget keeping aspects of the decision. And to get a feel for what guys like about the cars.

Personally I'd take a 928 hands down, even the really early ones, but the 944 is a good donor car for a V8 too.

Try this: Just look into the engine bay of the 928 and start up the car and listen - if it's tuned and running right I'm guessing the 944 will disappear from your consciousness.

The particular 928 you're looking at is the same vintage '78 that a friend of mine has and he really likes it. I think this one is a really simple engine setup - 16V? My buddy puts out anywhere from $2K to $3K per year in maintenance (but everyone differs on how much they maintain, of course). He drives it as hard as he likes.

Lizard has one and so do a few other guys here. They can fill you in.

And, again, look at that engine bay. Sigh. It's just awesome.

Kind of makes our old 924 turbos look like dinky cars!

Use CarFax and check out the cars thoroughly - there do exist con men that have fake ads running on Craig's List, eBay. Not always easy to catch.

I'm suspicious. 49,627 miles...hmm. For $5k?

Does anyone know how much it would cost to repair a first and second synchro on the 928?

Honest....pop over to Rennlist and surf the 928 forum. They can give you answers to all those specific questions. Very knowledgeable about maintaining 928's and can give you specific answers and dollar amounts.

Try to keep in mind the 928's are getting more and more expensive (from what I've read) to buy parts for but not impossible to find. It all depends on how deep your pockets are.

I've been very tempted lately to try to find an early model, automatic, but I haven't bothered to look 'cause I know it's not going to happen. Not unless I sell my 924. And even then, the wife is looking sideways at me; not in a good way.

Good luck.

A bad shifter cup can cause the same symptoms as a lower gear synchro. Had the same problem on my 78 when it would grind and pop out of gear. Turned out that the plastic liner in the cup had deteriorated. i.e. check the simple stuff first.

See that it sold for $5,100. Did you win it?

That Momo steering wheel (almost identical to the ones found in Subaru WRXs) in place of the original makes me sad...

No. I didn't know enough about it in the time that it was about to sell. I'll have to look around for another 928.

Preferably in the Omaha area. If anyone has one for sale or knows of one from Norfolk, NE to Omaha, NE PLEASE send me a PM!!! I will be much obliged!

However, I know how difficult it will be for that to happen.

No mention of when the belts were last done & he has no clue what color he repainted the car. "Complete repaint Porsche color (Original Porsche Red)."
