Is it something with orange and blue, Dan?

Raceboy, yes, I was pretty committed to the Gulf scheme...I fell in love with the scheme four years ago when I saw a gulf-schemed 911 RS replica car at the Mid-America FunFest (as it turns out, the last one they held with Porsches ). I haven't seen any gulf-schemed 924's here in the states, but suddenly, I've seen about 4 or 5 of them pop up in Europe, including yours and Dennet's car that daveo just snagged.

I'm still on the fence with the gulf thing. I'd like to do a vintage race livery scheme, but the challenge is that most of them are based on white or silver, and I really dislike white and silver...too nondescript for my taste (no offense, Steve!). I also don't care for the Martini colors, and anything red is out for sure (I already have a red Porsche, and IMO there's too much Guards Red driving around already). That doesn't leave too many options when it comes to bonafide Porsche liveries. I've toyed around a little with the dark blue and gold combo that was used on one of the D-prods, but it just hasn't caught my fancy. So I may end up doing something completely different, and not even try to match a livery scheme.

Then the battery well is next, which is where the dry sump tank is going.

Steve, I am considering this option too. I've thought about doing some cowl induction stuff to provide cooling air flow down over the sump tank and exiting it through some sort of grill on the bottom side. My fabricator was a little concerned about having a vat of hot oil directly next to the driver. What precautions are you taking from a safety perspective with this arrangement????

Dan, there is no need to feed air over the tank. It only gets to 80-90 deg C, so not an issue. My tank will sit in the left most front corner of the passenger footwell (your drivers side). The filler will be above the scuttle, and the tank will be in a solid "cage" to support it, as it is a two piece tank, thats splits around the centre to allow cleaning. This whole area will then be boxed in by sheet metal. Although removable, it will act as a firewall. Also, as the tank is inside the roll cage, the protection is much greater.
However, we are also looking at placing it in the rear if the room allows. Trouble is that the tank is very tall, about 18", so i really don't want it hanging down by the road, which means the front footwell is the best option. Due to the layout of the 924, there is nowhere else to put it. Look at the GTR's. Whilst i could fit in into the engine bay, effectively under the LH headlight, this puts a lot of weight out front, plus all the additional weight of the necessary supports.
The spare wheel well is not an option as that must come out to accept the 968 box.
One other option that we will look into is fitting the oil & fuel tanks forward of the rear suspension into the area under the rear seats. If this can be cut & modified to suit, it might be the perfect answer, as it centralises the mass of the major fluids. It might mean making a removeable "box" ala the GTR's to cover it, but it might be the perfect solution.
Dan, as you have your car open at the rear, could you take some ppics of this area for me? It's the area from behind the font seats to the leading edge of the boot (trunk) floor.

Steve

Shouldn't this thread title be - "re-birth of a legend" ? - the orange car was already an amazing machine.

Looking forward to watching this one over the next few months / years

Well I have always had a thing about the Ford Signal colours of the 70's hence either signal yellow (oops, been done!) or green would be good (your car is nearly signal orange now)

My absolute dream colour scheme is Mclaren silver and black....fabulous and must be possible, if perhaps expensive.

Cheers
Simon
