Can anyone tell me the difference between the Porsche 924 turbo and the turbo "s"? From what I can see so far, the "s" is slower, but I'm not exactly sure. Just something I'm curious about.

From what I understand the turbo S was only available in North America in 1980 and had the four wheel disk instead of the disk/drum the rest of the '80 North American turbo cars came with. Sometimes you even got a cool sticker on the hood . |

I am one of the "lucky" ones with a cool S decal still on my car. The S version comes with 928 style disc wheels, bars etc. It has all the bells and whistles that was avail at the time. The S version was only available in 1980 model year.

Hey, I have an '80 931 with 16" 928 wheels, 4 wheel discs etc but no stickers nor original paint. Lucky me!
Brian Long (the 924 historian) never mentioned this, though.

Would really like to see a picture of the turbo S decal.
I own a 80 931 with the M471 option (sway bars, 16" 928 wheels, and 4 wheel disc brakes). It still has the original paint, but no decal. |

'80 turbos did not come with impulse senders, in fact theres an early '81 at the machinics shop I go to that doesnt have the impulse sender either but has the electronic ignition.Gotta love small volume production . |

PAT, I also have a 1981 931 that I am trying to get running. the car was missing the Ignition Unit mounted under the center console inside the car. I plugged the 12 pin main connector into the control unit that I aquired in hopes of getting the car running & I still had no spark (I have eliminated the coil, plugs, distributor, plug wires, etc as being the possible cause....since the ignition unit was MISSING when I got the car, I am almost possitive that it is the problem). The bizzare thing about this was the fact that I have not been able to locate the Impulse Sender Plug under the dash. Now I am wondering if my car ever came equiped with the pulse sender. If it was one of he early production 1981 931 cars, would it use the same ignition unit as the later 81 & 82 cars? (Part# 931.602.073.00). Whats even MORE bizzare is the fact that the OTHER connection plug is missing (the threaded cable that runs to the intake manifold). I have not been able to locate THAT plug EITEHR!....If the Impulse sender was not equiped on that car, would the other cable not be equiped on it either??..Any ideas??? Let me know....

Turbo S simply means: turbo sexy.
Kris check you serial number on you car, maybe you can find out if it was early production (low serial number?) |

FOUND THEM!... I followed the vacuum cable from the intake through the firewall & saw that the previus owner had shoved BOTH cables inbetween the carpet as they entered the firewall. I now get the car to fire, but it runs like CRAP!....Time to check the lines, glean the gas tank, timing.....in a nut shell....TUNE UP!!!!
But at least the missing cable mystery is solved. |

It is amazing what you might find if you look hard enough.
The 81-84 931s had the full digital control. They will have a vacuum line coming from just under the cold start valve. And a single Impulse sender.
The 80 still used the vacum distributer to resolve emissions.
80 was a weird year for parts, it shares the 911 system for that year.
I just figured Kris wasn't seeing what he needed to see. I don't know if he compared the two years and figured it out. But by looking it over you can see the differences. What happens sometimes is the 80 distributer is put on the car to bypass the 81 system, usually when there is a falure in the electronics and the owner is to cheap to buy the replacement part. And it happens but rarely the 80 is rebuilt to series two specifications. Or an series two engine is used to replace the 80 engine.

I knew the exact differences in the ignition system from the 80 opposed to the 81-82 cars (that is actually why I wanted an 81-82 model). I was just stumped on where in the world those cables were at.
AS far as that 931S Bobby, I am interested in it. The 80 931S I have has good body panels & interior on it. But it is ALONG way from running. How much do you want for yours? Im am 3 hours away & can pick it up....
Let me know, Chris
