I am looking into buying a 81 924s from my Moms friend, but theres a problem with the fuel pumps not giving any juice to the engine. The engine turns over but nothing happens. Now the question is should I just buy 2 new fuel pumps, hoses, fuses, and the whole nine yards or could it be someother (major?) problems causing the engine to only turn over? The reason why I ask this is because I am located in the greater seattle area and the car is located in the portland area, so my plan is to buy the parts I need, head down there, fix it up, and then drive home. But Im scared that Im gonna go down there with the pumps n stuff and once I get em in nothins gonna work. Any help would be greatly appreciated cause I dont want to make a major mistake and be stuck far far away from home |

You might have a little more luck posting this in the General Discussion area - this area is only for 924S's, 86-88. The 81 you're looking at is not that, and is quite different mechanically.
Don't plan on driving it home. Even if you were to get the pumps fixed/engine running (which is quite achievable), there's a very good chance something else might pop up once you get going and strand you anyway. I heartily recommend finding a way to tow it, unless you can make many trips to debug it and repair/replace all major stuff (and I'd start with all belts and hoses).
For me personally to do, I could pull it off with a day's work - but I wouldn't want to.
That fear you mention is the rational side of your brain trying to gain control! (don't let it
Not to be said that it's not worth recovering; go for it, they're great cars, I should know, I'm on my 4th and working on buying a 5th.
As for your technical problems. Yes, it's most likely that there is a fuel delivery issue; possibly caused by a bad fuel pump or two (most likely the external pump, but possibly also the internal pump), or perhaps just the fuel pump relay. The ignition system tends not to screw up.
However, there's a good chance the gas tank is full of crud that will kill a new fuel pump if it's not flushed out. Read the FAQ for more info about fuel pumps in specific and getting a car running that has sat for a while...
Good luck!

Hmmm I havent been able to post all this weekend cause my internet was messin up. But I didnt know that this forum was for later model 924s's.
I already was expecting to have to replace all fluids, belts, and otherstuff that degrades over time. I was just really wondering if there was any major issues that wouldnt cause the pump to pump
...now all I need is for Hollywood Video to hire me so I can work 40 hours a week (while going to school fulltime) to get the mula for my baby . I think I like these cars too much already lol |
