Which Porsche would you have?

Hypothetically. That means, if a German SS guard in uniform came to your place of residence and confiscated your 924 (and all 924s), but offered you a consolation prize of one of these Porsches:

912
914
944
928
968

Which one could come closest to replacing your 924? That's the 924 with the awesome steering and handling, that doesn't rust, that runs forever regardless of the condition of the engine, with manual everything, analog everything, light & tight. It's the 924 that you don't drive from place to place, you race from place to place. Whether you race poorly or greatly is up to you.
Anyway, which somewhat contemporary Porsche is closest to the 924?

Well, your poll asks which Porsche is 'equal' to the 924. I'd say all the Porsches on your list, with perhaps the exception of the 912 and 914... perhaps... are 'better' than the 924 in any measurable way. The 924 is just cheaper than the others.

So, taking your question the way I think you intended it, which Porsche would I prefer to own rather than a 924? Today, a 968 Turbo S. Tomorrow, I might change my mind to a 928 GTS, at least before midday... after midday I might change my mind back to a 968 Turbo S again... then, the day after tomorrow, I might get a hankerin' for a 914/6, perhaps in GT trim...

928 just beacuse I didn't have to pay for it!

A Long nose D type jag replica (Original if I'm not paying! ) would be better though!

Why anyone would take a 944 over a 968 or even a 914 is beyond me.

I've got my 924 and 951, there honestly isn't a whole lot more in the Porsche world that I really want (within reason).

I used to really like the 968, but in the past couple of years it has started looking odd to me, a little chunky maybe, I don't know, it just doesn't look right anymore. The 914 is cool, but just not for me. I sort of like the R-Gruppe 911 look and ethic, but certainly not enough to pay the price tag. The 928 is a bit too much GT for me, same with the 993+ cars.

Maybe in 15-20 years when the Cayman comes down to what i am willing to pay for a fun car I'll buy one. It would have to be a de-badged one though, God what an awfull name. Things went seriously wrong at Porsche when they started naming instead of numbering their cars, it meant the marketting department seized control of the company from the engineers. Very sad.

Some ambiguity regarding this question.

In a direct response to that would have to say early 944.

BUT if the question were "which FREE car would you prefer as a replacement?) .....................

Well, depending on which model 928 was on offer it would be either that or of course a 968.

Really? Well, for me, it'd depend specifically which model of 944... But a Turbo or S2 would surely blow any 914 into the weeds? So there's performance -please don't play the 16-year-old and say, "Yeah, but, if you put twin turbo's on a 914 it'll be way faster than a 944!" I'm talking about standard road-going versions here. And although I've never been in a 944 (again, thinking specifically Turbo or S2 here) nor a 914, I strongly suspect the 944's are much more luxurious than a 914, with better ergonomics, right? So there's general comfort. And I'd also suspect the 944 is much more practical in general, compared to the 914. I mean, it'd have more luggage space, right? I won't mention the +2 kiddie seats in the four-four because it's debatable as to whether they're actually all that useful.

The "fun factor" of the 914 may well outweigh all of these more pragmatic considerations. I don't know. Just trying to point out that there are many good reasons to consider a 944 a better ride than a 914.

A 944 over a 968? Yeah, that's a much harder argument to make. In my humble opinion, it'd simply come down to looks, which is totally subjective...

I'm afraid I'll have to flush 90% of that response until you have actually driven a 914 2.0, Khal. Roomy, comfy, light, smoooooth. Great seating position, a ton of leg room. Two big trunks. Quick, light, precise steering. Best handler ever. True open air motoring. Ahhhhhhhhh. . .

And yes, while I like the 2.5, I really don't care for the 944s plastified 80's styling. Ruined the lines of the toofah, IMO. Would take an S over a 44 NA every day of the week.

Fair call, I could be wrong.

It's funny but the 914 has always been to me what others seem to see the 924 as... i.e. The Crap One. Not A Real Porsche. I rag on the toofah all the time but it's just that Aussie sense of self-deprecation. I own one, after all!

I freely admit it's only my perception of the 914, perhaps not the reality. Just difficult to get away from those old prejudices sometimes...

I haven't driven a 914 either (hope to remedy that someday), but I picked a 944 out of the line-up because, assuming I get my choice, I'd happily take a '89 944 Turbo S. I just love what they did with the engine; it's a phenomenal performer for what it is and I actually like the styling (curves are nice). Hard choice between that and a 968 though. Maybe one day when I've driven a 914 I'll change my mind though.

Well, and when the OP said 944, I read early 944 NA. If some 951 Uber Wagen was in the mix I might think differently about it.
