|
|
Hey all!
I've been kicking this idea around and was wondering if any of you have tried this or think this is just a plain old bad idea.....
While I was working on pulling out the dash this weekend I pulled the front and side headliner trim off (the plastic/foam trim) and the headliner just looked like complete crap. There had to have been some water trapped up there because there is some rust up there and the vinyl didn't play well with it.
What I was thinking of doing was pulling the headliner out as carefully as I can and then running to the closest hobby/fabric store and buying some similiar quality and pattern vinyl. I'm then going to cut to match the orignal, spray some adhesive on the back and put it back up.
I'm hoping to make it look all sorts of new again with no aging or sagging in it. Does this sound reasonable or sane? Is there some padding that I haven't seen up there yet too? Any idea on a good replacement for that? _________________ My First Porsche

I would say that's an excellent idea; the base underlying headliner is a pretty simple piece, just I'd recommend you cut oversize when you cut it. Even the pattern match isn't so critical IMO, since it's mostly covered and not all that visible anyway.
Get 3M spray adhesive specifically for headliner use, from the auto parts store. The regular spray adhesive lacks the full sticky power to hold the headliner in.
Yes, there is some foam in there, and it definitely will disintegrate, so plan on replacing it if at all possible. I recommend just using foam insulation tape, wherever possible, from the hardware store, actually!
Enjoy! _________________ Vaughan Scott

I did that on my last 924. It worked out good. I will be doing something like that on my present car when I get to the interior. I will just need a bigger piece since I am eliminating the sunroof. |

I re-did mine with vinyl from an upholstery shop. They have rolls of thin foam that you can simply glue to the vinyl with 3m spray adhesive.
I bought a section large enough to do the entire headliner area. I should mention that I have the moon roof version so this would be much different on a hard top.
For the most part you just glue and tuck the edges first then cut the moon roof out a bit over sized. Then install the pinch weld trim and "trim" the edges back with a razor blade. _________________ 1976 924
