Even a ball-park number is fine, but the more exact you can be, the better.
Please say which model it is, and mileage would be nice too.
And what parts were replaced? |

Yikes 2K a year.... not even close.
Of course mine is ... or was... until my son crashed a law tractor into it... but don't get me started on that again... just about mint.
I only put about 500-1K miles on mine each year now, but a couple years ago I had to put it into normal service for about 8 months. I did not have to do anything to it durring that time except change the oil.
I still say if you get a good example that was well cared for and you do the same... it will take care of you. Normally once you catch up a bit to the cars age (if it was neglected) you can sail along for some time with out having to do anything.
That is not to say these cars do not have problems when not properly cared for... they do... but they can run even when there are some serious issues with them. I just jump on them before they become that way. _________________ 1982 924

Yea, 2K per year minimum if you`re cheap and do your own wrenching.
Seriously, If you have to ask this question give more consideration to buying a stock honda or toyota.
Before you go much further suggest ringing a few insurance companies and seek a quote after stating your age, driving experience, Porsche and turbo.
Not trying to burst your bubble but being realistic.
As was stated in another thread: "THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS A CHEAP PORSCHE!"

I've already gotton an insurance quote.
I need to know about how much I would need to spend on maintenance per year. Sorry I wasn't clear on that earlier. |

Squeeky
It comes to this.
The car you buy will make a big difference.
If you purchase a bottom of the barrel 924 that is a wreck then you will likely run into the same issues as the guys above spending 2-5K a year.
Ohy!
If however you purchase the most car you can. Say look for a real niced 1981-82 NA 2.0L car that has had all its maint followed then you will be much better off.
If you get a car that has been neglected expect the following.
New tires $400
New battery $80
New brakes and service $100-$150 (that is you do the labor) $400 plus if you let some one do it and rip you off.
Timing belt $20 you change it.
Other things you will be looking at with various charges
Alternator bushings and belt
Tune up, cap, rotor, wires, plugs and such.
Widow and sun roof seals.
Seal the battery box if the PO was a smuck and left leaves and crap in there allowing the box to rot out.
Relays
Fuel pump
on and on.
The only time a car that is the bottom of the barrel makes any sence is when you have tons of parts sitting around and do not plan to use the car as your every day vehicle. Otherwise it will cost you ten times what you purchased it for and you will be constantly working on it.
So I say again. Get the best car you can for the money. I would say look in the $2500-$3K range for a mint low miles 1981-1982 924 2.0L. These cars are tough and yes I would say reliable if properly maintained.
That said. I would figure in $500-$600 for an unexpected repair. That is for a car as I describe directly above. (But I find it hard to spend that much on my car in years.)
That is my experience with past 6 924s and 944 I have owned. Each one was from various levels ... terrible to great. So always always get the best example you can get if you want to save the money and head aches down the road. If you do not mind turning and have a parts car then go for a fixer... but be prepaired for a lot of work. _________________ 1982 924

Most of this information has previously been posted, in considerable detail. You should really learn to search before starting a new thread for every thought you have.
It's not that we mind answering questions, I just wanted to point out that nearly all the info you have asked for is already available and would probably only take a few moments to search it out... _________________ '80 924 Turbo |

I bought ine off of Ebay and it was not taken care of nor as described. I have replaced some things and have to say the car really feels like it is reliable. Cranks every time, A?C still works just not like I want it too but will address that in due time, but on the plus side everything I have done you could immediately tell a difference giving a sens of accomplishment! Not a super fast car but a bunch of fun and still smokes my brothers modified (riced) Ford Focus. _________________ 1982 PORSCHE 931 |

I don't find the search as effective as asking a straight-forward question an getting a direct answer. |

Hi, Squeaky. Khal's probably grumpy, missing the nice weather in the land of Oz and having to drink Canadian beer.
Eturbo924 probably said it best.
I'd have a hard time spending $2K on our cars in a year, but we've got parts cars and do our own wrenching. Any used car you buy will cost you the most in the first year; if you sort it then, it won't break your bank. My wife's 924 was $600 from a friend two years ago. We've probably spent $500 a year -tops - on it, and it's a good little car.

For the 924:
Plunked about 4K on it, including original price, from sleazy used car dealer. Rebuilt head + new pistons / rings + rod bearings + main bearings + gaskets + clutch = about $1000. New water pump & oil pump were about $90.00. I could go on or you could check out this link
To see what you're in for. Keep in mind, this is an extreme case of catching up on badly neglected maintenance, where, in theory the Audi 2 Litre engine should easily top 200 K miles with regular oil changes and basic servicing. _________________ 1977.5 924 "Martini" head / New Old Stock rebuild
