I’m guessing that this has been addressed before but the search feature on here isn't always the best. I am
having the dreaded powered sunroof failure just in time to enjoy beautiful sunny weather.
It started with the typical stripping of the plastic gears. No problem I thought. I will just pull the old out
and put in new ones.
I had been enjoying the top off but we had a day that looked like it might rain so I put it back on. One gear
had completely striped (drivers side) but the other still had enough teeth to go up and down.
I decided to pull both apart to see if both needed to be replaced and to reposition the levers in lock position
so the sun roof would not bounce up and down.
I pulled both gears out and confirm that both would need replacement.
at first I reassembled everything with the drivers side gear out. I attempted to raise the levers via power.
but nothing happened except for a wurr sound from the drivers side. passenger side made no noise.
so I switched the good gear to the passenger side and put the completely stripped gear in the the passenger
side. Again noise from left but nothing on the right. drivers side did move but now things are all screwed
up. with the key in off it would only move in one direction. put key in on and it again would only move in
the other direction . Got it good enough to drive. Started up the car and started driving. as I drove the sun
roof went crazy. It started trying to raise the roof. gear would strip slip and go then ketch and go up again.
I messed with the switch and finally got it to go down and stay down.
Now nothing happens when the key is in off. However when in on the drivers side goes all the way up
and all the way down to the unlock position.
Are there any diagrams floating out there that show how these things work? Any body know if it is a
single or double motor that runs each side and why the passenger side quit turning the gear. Or How to
get this system back in sink? _________________ Red 1987 924S with plans for D Productions Kit

Perhaps loose switches? Did you adjust them? Sounds like perhaps not... procedure on Clark's Garage... _________________ Vaughan Scott

Also, when you get new gears, pay close attention to the clutch mechanism. It should be loosened, then slowly tightened until it is just tight enough to raise the roof.
This should be your first step. AMHIK. _________________ Toofah King Bad

Score 1 for manually operated sunroofs. And hand-crank windows, and manual steering, and manual transmissions, and mechanical clutch... _________________ 1977.5 924 "Martini" head / New Old Stock rebuild

exactly. The manual roof is so easy to use and no worries about motors and gears and the like. _________________ 1982 924

Yeah, but opening Red's roof with the press of a button without propping it up, having it fly off, etc, etc, etc, is pretty nice. _________________ Toofah King Bad

It's amazing how much cooler it is in the car with the roof tilted open. _________________ White 87 924S "Ghost"
