Hey everyone. How would one estimate the life of an external fuel pump?
I need to know if i should buy a new one or not yet.
Its kindof loud and reved but this is because the insulation in the boot area is out...the rpm of it changes slightly at idle but then again my idle is 500-600 RPM and the voltage supplied could not be very steady(+ the alternator belt is crap).
The car pulls strong and there is no sign of detonation or it going lean.
any toughts ? _________________ Supercharger and EFI kits

My original 77 vintage 984 Bosch pump was still working although noisy when I replaced it with a new one for reliability. Big mistake. The old one was made in Germany and the new one was European (cant recall where now, but NOT German). The new one was actually noisier and only lasted 2 years. POS
So had to put the old one back in until I got a new Pierburg that appears to be working very well and much quieter.
So life expectancy is somewhere between 1 and over 30 years.
Smoothie and others have been happily running Pierburgs for some years now. They may still be cheap at Rock Auto.

The key to long life for one of these pumps is to use it often and keep water out of the fuel. _________________ White 87 924S "Ghost"

hah...for this price for the fuel if there is just a sip of water in a 1000 liter tank i'll sue them !
No water in the tank for me....but i've noticed that the pump RPM fluctuates at idle and that worries me that it might let go on the highway. _________________ Supercharger and EFI kits

Extend the life of the pump. Every year of so run the gas down to a couple of gallons and drain the tank and clean the pump. Backflush the pump gently.
The cars are old and rust accummulates in the tank and therefore the pump.
Ask me how I know.
I removed mine and took out a cup full of rust.
When you remove the pump you should flush the tank by running the gas you removed a couple of times to clean out the rust. When clear replace pump. _________________ "Never let them see you sweat"
