|

Car was 'born' Sep '76. I don't know how many miles on the clutch, of course, the odometer does not work and it is not the original speedometer.
OK, I had the trans out because the detent interconnect was missing and it got stuck in second(requireing removal and partial teardown, TWICE!).
SO... I noticed that the propeller shaft was loose. I could rotate it about 15-20 degrees before it stopped. I would spring back though. I thought the spring loaded hub had come apart and left a huge gap.
BUT... I just noticed, in the HAYNES book, chapter 6, page 138, photo 3.28, that there are 3 small springs towards inside of the 6 large, torque shock absorbing, springs. They look like they would make it feel about like it does.
THE question is: If I have no odd noises a smooth pedal and no slippage is it nomal to have that 15-20 degree springloaded one way movement? Do I need to pull the friction disk out and inspect?
I have a replacement, but it is VW and has a solid hub. Would the solid hub cause problems?
Thanks, in advance for all the experienced, insightful advice. _________________ The Porsche is now my son's, my car is cooler, slower but cooler.

How many miles on the car? Could it have a rubber centered clutch disc? When the rubber blows up due to age, the disc has metal stops that keep the clutch center from spinning freely. . .sounds consistent with your symptoms. . .big piece of play back and forth. _________________ Toofah King Bad

2.0L engines do not use a rubber centered clutch disc. That would be a 924S and 944 problem.
Personally I have never tried to rotate a clutch disc to check for play, but the springs would give the clutch some play.
There are no VW parts that are the equivalent of the Porsche Part. While some VW parts are used on the 924 2.0 engine, the clutch is not one of them. The pressure plate and the throwout bearing, yes. You can see that in the VW part numbers.
But if you take the time to check the numbers, you will see that the clutch disc has a Porsche Part Number, and a Porsche Price. The pressure plate has a VW number, and look at the price.
So, I don't think that substituting a VW part in place of the Porsche 924 clutch disk is a great idea. |

I have an OE style clutch I pulled from my car when I went with a HD clutch setup. It is as you described with the three smaller springs. I can just stick my finger in the splined hole and compress the springs. Strange setup but I doubt this is a sign of a problem with yours,

Thanks all for the replies. Todd, thanks for the answer I was hoping for.
By "interchangeable" I meant the splines and clutch size were the same. Either way I am glad not to have to try it.
Tortional resinances are not something that can be "intuitively engineered" and, with that long drive shaft right off the engine, may have been the the reason for those strange small springs.
On the bright side, after pulling the torque tube back I checked the bearings in it by spining the shaft, they are smooth as silk, so 1 less worry there.
