|
|
Ok, I found out that a 924 bellhousing won't work in my engine swap. Hopefully a 931 bellhousing does work, as promised. But.. Will a 931 bellhousing match up to my 924 torque tube? Did the bellhousings change at all as the transmissions changed? ie, do I have to have a matching bellhousing? I would imagine not, but the 931 on a 924 torque tube.. I'm kind of concerned about that one. _________________ Brian near Seattle, WA

no...they are different. and i dont know if the 924 shaft would mate the audi motor. i think you will need to use a 931 torgue tube, gearbox and bellhousing for that audi engine. _________________ Supercharger and EFI kits

why won't a 924 bellhousing work for your engine swap?

This from the guy that WANTS my project to fail..
Yeah, I plan to update the blog real soon with pictures. The 924 bellhousing is too small to even fit around the audi flywheel. Not to mention only half the bolts line up, if that. _________________ Brian near Seattle, WA

hahaha...nah i dont want your project to fail, but you will need all that i mentioned above. + you will need to convert to hidraulic clutch ...this means to drill big ass holes trough the firewall and get all the system from a 931/944 including the pedal assembly and master cyl complete with lines and i think that these are the minor mods you will have to do to get that engine runing compared to the rest of them
i've put a 931 engine into a 924 and it was not a piece of cake...you need all that stuff + you need professional tools....an elevator....basicaly you have to take everything out including the rear suspension.
so good luck ! and let us know
PS: if i were to swap an engine into the 924 i'd surely go for a V8 maby a porsche V8 _________________ Supercharger and EFI kits

the 931 bellhousing has the same bolt pattern.

Yep, but it will contain a larger flywheel and clutch assembly.

I like to call this part "fun with tools"

Well if it's the same bolt pattern, saying it "bolts right up" is kind of bending the truth. Half the bolts line up, half of them don't.. I do believe some things are over-engineered, but that's really pushing the limits.
I'll wait till I have a 931 bellhousing in my hands to see exactly why it won't bolt to my torque tube. That torque tube just has a 1/4" sheet of steel on the end of it where it bolts to the bell housing. I could fairly easily cut that off and weld on a new one with a different bolt pattern if I had to. The input shaft has nothing to do with the bellhousing, it doesn't even touch it. _________________ Brian near Seattle, WA

Wrong wrong wrong wrong.. 931 bellhousing bolts right up to the 924 torque tube. Bolt holes line up just fine, alignment dowls fit snugly just like the 924 bellhousing. Input shaft sticks through just fine, and yes, the 924 input shaft fits the Audi pilot bearing flawlessly. _________________ Brian near Seattle, WA

Thats what I figured, but I didn't want to say anything. I have a motorless 931 out in the driveway, so I'm interested in this project a bit, does the 931 bellhousing fit over the audi clutch/etc better than the na one did?
