there is a (or supposed to be anyhow) a plastic bushing under the wheel, that seats in the upper sterring shaft bearing. these are common to fail/disintegrate after time, and are easily replaced. i believe the 911 part will fit, but do a search here to verify, and get the part number. _________________ Eric

i dont remember how i did it, but i'm certainly not a Professional steering bearing installer.
there might be a very high tension circlip in the way and i think its tight getting everything back together. but it fixed all play at the steering wheel, so its worth the possibility of taking your eye out with a flying circlip. _________________ 1978 924 N/A

There are two different ignition housings, the early housing have a circlip holding the bearing in so use some needle nose pliers to get it out, the later '80 up IIRC have the bearing enclosed in the housing and you need to file the edge back a little to knock out the bearing from behind.
When you install the new bearing use a flat blade screwdriver and hammer and pinch in the metal around the edge working from opposite sides when you do to keep the tension even.

a complete bearing change may not be needed, sometimes its just the plastic sleeve that is missing or worn away. it also acts as a bushing or spacer irrc, and sits between the bearing and shaft...

the bearing is about $8 and the spacer pictured above is about $2 IIRC,
there's also this little insert that fits inside the bearing, on the early ignitions it was hard plastic on the later ignition it was a softer plastic. This secures the inside of the bearing to the shaft. This came with my bearing, it was totally deformed when I pulled the old bearing out...

The up and down play is nothing to worry about. It is no safety issue.
More diff. is the play when you can pull the steering towards you and back!!
Then you have to change the middle part of your steering column.
