I got a change to Dyno the 81 928 with 86 engine running on MSII V3.0 w/ EDIS

I still need to do some tuning on the car, so there is more to be had esp lower in the RPM band. However that being said.

With standard Dyno correction the car pulled 296.5 RWHP and 316.3 RW FT LB. Considering that these engine are rated at 288 crank horse, and 290 crank ft lb, this turned a few heads.
some of the 85/86 with a better exhaust, chips and in perfect tune/running order have pulled around 260-270 RWHP however so I would say it is safe to say that these engines were severly under rated from the factory.

All runs were done in 4th gear btw

Lizard,

It seems Porsche always low ball their engine outputs. There has been a constant occurence of guy's testing their cars over here and to find them consistently way over stated BHP. For example, a GT3 is listed at 381. Now it seems this is a bit condservative, as every car comes out at 402-407 bhp.
Now Ferrari on the other hand......

Lizard, great numbers.

Agree that Porsche underates their engines. When the 78 model 928's only had 220 HP but 300+ ft lbs of torque, something is amiss.

The sheet printed was while the comp was in SAE correction

so as you can see SAE correction worked out to be 285.8RWHP and 304.4 RW FT LBS

That is within 20hp so that isnt too far off

However taking into account that this engine rated for 288hp and 290 ft lbs at the crank, when *new*.
This engine has over 300,000km on it now with nothing internally touched.
I had estimated my crank horsepower at around 350 crank and it seems I was pretty damn close my crank HP is probably around 355-360 calculating a 17% drivetrain loss, which is what others have calculated the manual drivetrain on the 928 to be. That indicated that there is around a 70hp difference which is a VERY large difference.

One of the other 928 fellows in the states and I had some rather interesting discussions and he thinks that there is one part of the intake which is a restriction in the HP, I plan on modifying a stock intake to see if he is correct or not, I am not sure if I will put the modded one one mine and test, or bring it down to him and dyno with stock, swap over and then dyno again so see how much of a gain really could be seen from that.

except for the dips (which I believe might be detonation, even though we didnt hear any, or a miss) the lines are VERY smooth and nice. Esp how flat that torque curve is.

Lizard,

Forgive my ignorance, I'm not up to spped on the mods to your motor. If however it is stock, 70 over stated IS a big jump, but what the hell, more is always better than less
Re the dips. Dont start getting too bent out of shape over them. Most older cars show this trait. it tends to be a characteristic of the intake system. It's often the way the air flow acts in the plenum. Hence the modern intakes such as varioram, that change their flow dynamics to optimise both low and high rpm flow. i would seriously doubt you are suffering from detonation. ut it might be worth just playing around with /fuellingin these areas to be sure. A good wideband sensor would be the ideal way of being sure.
Anyhoo, good job.

Steve

The intake, and motor are bone stock no mods at all,

I had that dip on all runs, I will be changing the fuel filter and I have replaced the plugs and am now running a .045 gap on them which seems to have helped.

I am also running 1 deg of retard on both cams btw. So that will aid me alittle but not too much.

I do have a WB sensor, however according to the dyno (owner I trust and is a personal unit not a shop) mine is off, at idle I read 13.2-13.4 afr and he shows 14.7 roughly. I will be confirming my AFR between the MS and the LC1 very shortly though.

I went on a run down to oregan yesterday (was up at 6:00am after going to bed at 11:00pm) and didnt get home till 5:20 AM so it was almost a 24 hour day, and the majority of the day was on back roads in WA having an absolute blast. But right now my mind is shutting down, and not working so well.
