I called SAP to get info on fuel pumps for my '80 924 NA. The internal is $75 and new OEM. The external is $190 and bolts right in. There is also the Piersburg #98154 which is $150. The guy said that one has different fittings that would need some work to make it fit. Anyone gotten the Piersburg and successfully gotten it connected? I was also looking for fuel pumps for a 1978 928. The fuel pumps for that are the same as those for my car. _________________ Rob

I went with the Pierburg pump. Sounded like a better design. The Bosch is a centrifugal pump whereas the Pierburg is piston. I've been told the Bosch uses metal parts for the pump mechanism and the Pierburg uses a type of plastic and as such is more quite, but have never verified. When the Bosch wears out, you get metal shavings in the fuel system. The Pierburg just sounds better.
The "difference in fittings" is due to the fact the Pierburg comes with an adapter that is easily mistaken for the required check valve. Really there is no difference in dimensions or thread size, just that you should substitute preferably a new check valve for the adapter if you want to do it right. I think the check valve is like $20. _________________ 1981 931 (Concours)

I'm running the P'berg, nice and quiet, no problems. _________________ Toofah King Bad

Sorry, Tigger, the Bosch pump is positive displacement, 'roller cell' type (sprung ball bearings - see Haynes manual 80), a centrifugal pump could never provide the pressure.
Apart from that, +1. _________________ 1985 Porsche 924 'Lux', Kalahari Beige (my ex)

In the classical sense of the word, you are correct. The 'roller cell' is in what I would consider the same family as the classical centrifugal pump, more so than the piston family. _________________ 1981 931 (Concours)

The Pierburg is also a roller style - but its roller elements are made of plastic as mentioned, so they're more tolerant of dirt in the fuel - stupid Bosch design will just lock up with such tight tolerances. That also makes the Pierburg pump quieter, not to mention the better sound insulation.
I'm happily running the Pierburg pump on both my racecar and the DD 931. _________________ Vaughan Scott

Really??? SAP told me otherwise when I purchased mine a few years ago. I'll have to try and do a better job of confirming my sources. I apologize for that. Hope it didn't affect anyone. _________________ 1981 931 (Concours)
