This may make some of you shudder but, I have done it twice when I owned my 80 NA and had no ill effects. When I was scoping out my first replacment, I noticed the spare tire wheelwell had a raised area that matched the shape and alignment of the transaxle. Since the car was my daily driver and there was less than a weekend for the change out, here is what I did.

1. Used a dremel to cut out the outline on the spare wheelwell.
2. Removed the CV joints at the tranaxle
3. Unbolted the torquetube at the bellhousing
4. Unbolted shifter and linkage (in passenger compartment)
5. Removed exhaust
6. Unbolted the transaxle and moved it and the torquetube as a unit back into the spare wheelwell with a floor jack.

This gave me room to drop the bellhousing and replace the clutch. The hole in the wheelwell was patched with a stainless steel plate, sheetmetal screws (from the inside) and a lot of RTV.

Dennis

Nice, I'd recommend going over it with some spray on asphalt undercoating as well, that's what I did with my access panel for the shift linkage and top bolts of the tranny/torque tube on my car with the G31 tranny.

Thanks,

Just because I have no friends (just kidding ideola), and did not feel like dropping yet another tranny by myself, I decided to go this route while making the current clutch change in the 931. I'll update with how I closed off the opening once I am done.
