Must be something with the design.
Check all the rear seals for the hatch, taillights and drains.
I'm assuming the exhaust is OK?

Check Timstars posts, this has been covered in great detail.

His hatch didn't fit properly and after hundreds of posts (it felt like it) still never aligned it.

it wasn't an allignment thing with my hatch, I'm pretty sure the metal on the hatch was warped and was not closing airtight.

the hatch on my 924 is separating from the glass in one spot and I got a tiny bit of water dripping in when I washed it so that could cause a problem aswell.

also I noticed when I washed my 944 that the tail-lights filled up with a lot of water and it was because the caulking seal was leaking. I had to use new caulk and now they don't leak water.

use a garden hose to spray all around the hatch and if you get water into the car (other than a overflowing drain tube) then you should probably assume fumes are getting in.

the problem is that it is not easy to get the hatch to seal all around, sometimes you may just need a new hatch seal but it could be a bad hatch frame (replace the hatch) or it's possilbe it might need adjustment (if it's not cllosing tight enough).

also I did a search on rennlist and I found that there a a few others with 944s with the same problem and they can't figure it out.

if I have this problem with my 944 I'm going to drive it into a lake and buy a Yugo.

The hatch seal on my car went all around the lip, but it stopped around 2-3 inches to the left and to the right of the key lock. I could see into the car through there. What piece is supposed to be there?

Your hatch seal has shrunk!!

I always keep a few old ones around the shop so that when I see that problem, I just cut a piece to the correct length and glue it in.

Too bad you're in Canada since I usually charge one cold beer for anyone who drops by for that repair....

Bumper to Bumper sells generic seals that work perfectly for this application. They actually seal better than factory - there's more meat on 'em. My wife picked up enough to do her hatch and deliberatelt installed it so the part number was right side up, lower left corner, bless her, in case she needed to buy more! I'll get the number in daylight. Very, very cheap compared to factory seal.

Thanks Slam!

I just checked on Pelican Parts, thinking that the dealership would charge too much. They want $107! I think they're a little overpriced anyway, though. But still. Thanks.

How do you make a Yugo go faster?
A towtruck.

What do you call the shock absorbers inside a Yugo?
Passengers.

Two guys in a Yugo were arrested last night in Oakland following a push-by shooting incident.

The new Yugo has an air bag. When you sense an impending accident, start pumping real fast.

A friend went to a dealer the other day and said, "I'd like a gas cap for my Yugo." The dealer replied, "Okay. Sounds like a fair trade."

I have also said for years that the car is named because "Yugo, but it doesn't".

How can you get a Yugo to do 60 miles an hour?
Push it over a cliff.

I have the same problem since years......
Now i`ve lost all my hair, thanks to the lead-fuel i smoked in nearly 18 years of driving my 924.
I tried new seals, put ducktape around the whole outer hatch, used acryl to seal the taillights, put all round shaped plastik parts into the body, replaced all seals at the exhaust system, nothing worked out.
The only thing that i didnt tried was to seal the frame to the glass itself.
Do that next, sounds like a possible solution.
Good that it only happens with lowered side window. It s not to hot over here.

Up-in -smoke !
