well if I get the TDC correct (which is going to scare me) then it should be okay. 90 degree method would only be temporary,if i do it myself I would get the tensioned checked by a shop.
I wouldn't mind if someone who knows what they are doing to come help me. The first time I changed the timing belt on my924 I had the cam completely wrong and it wouldn't start then I fixed that and it would start adn the timing belt was running at the edge of the camshaft like it was slowly coming off the edge.
if it's looks impossible for me to do I'll just have a shop do it. No point in doing preventative maintenance yourself that kills the engine faster. _________________ 78 924 sold.

If you do that with a 944 you have just created yourself a top end rebuild most valves will be bent.
good luck tho.

haha, that's not my idea. Go ask Clark on Clarks garage he says using the cricket or even finger method of tensioning is fine as long as you recheck the tension after the 2000 mile stretch and periodically check the belts (make sure it's not humming).
do I feel confident in driving a hand tensioned belt for a long time, NO.
but it's not like a hand tensioned belt is going to snap or come off right away unless you make it really lose or make it crazy tight, it's just if you leave it like that it won't last as long.
most people I assume hand tension their 931 here and those are interference motors. _________________ 78 924 sold.

Tim...the PO said that the belts had been serviced...why can't you just pull off the timimg belt cover and inspect the belt and water pump...drive the car for the summer and have the belt done before you go off to school agian. The truth is...you can find an entire motor for what your looking to spend for a front end service. _________________ 1976 924

he said that the belts and rollers were done but said nothing about the water pump and said he'll try to find the receipt I asked him again to find the receipt.
I'm probably getting the car maybe tom or latest tuesday or wednesday.
I guess I can remove the front cover look at the belt and see if it is new..... hard to tell but I guess if the writting on the belt looks new and isn't faded the belt must be fairly new right?
hard to tell if the rollers are new they could just look really clean. But even if the timing belt and rollers are new and the water pump is 10 years old that's not going to last very long, I don't want a leaking or seized water pump when I'm back in school.
I'm guessing with 240,000 kms the water pump must have been replaced at some time or couple of times by now.
yeah with 1800-2000 timing belt service I'm pretty sure you can find a good used motor, I just saw a crashed 944 with running motor for 800 on craiglist. Now replacing a motor would be impossible to do by myself. _________________ 78 924 sold.

Chernan,
If you think that looks complicated, you should see the engine with both belts install. Right now you're just looking at the timing belt. The balance shaft belts in located immediately in front of the timing belt. |

Good Used Engines.
The problem with buying a good used engine is the fact that it will not come with a history. I can buy what are supposed to be good used running engines all day, priced from about $400 up. The problem is the fact that a used engine needs a full service, which is much easier to do while the engine is out of the car, AND how about the clutch? Anyone installing an engine would be a fool not to replace the used clutch while the engine is out. There goes another $600 for parts.
So a good running $500 engine will need $1200-$1400 in service parts (front of engine service, clutch set, and how about a oil cooler reseal while everything is out of the way)?
And that does not include the cost of the labor to pull the old engine and install the new one, if you are not doing the labor yourself.
So a an engine replacement with a $500 engine ends up being at least $3000, and you still don't know how good the innards of that $500 engine are, even if it looks good, and you saw it run before it was pulled. |
