I had to replace the throttle cable on the 924S I just resurrected; it was 2 strands away from completely breaking. Thankfully, the PO had already purchased a replacement and included it with the car.
However there was a slight problem. On the automatic, the accel cable is extremely long (not the 2 foot or so of the manual), and loops around the throttle cam and back all the way to the trans - I think maybe this is the kickdown cable? Anyway, as a result, when replacing the cable, you must crimp on a new lug to engage the throttle cam, as well as a threaded end at the trans to thread on the ball socket which grabs the ball on the trans linkage. The ball end for the accel pedal is already on the cable when purchased.
I had neither of these two latter parts; probably why the cable was not already replaced. I called, not available aftermarket from my usual local parts place. So I had to call the dealer. Ouch!
They quoted me about $45-55 for each piece! I was not sure they were pricing the right parts, though I did give them the part numbers, so I asked them the price on the accel cable - $450! Nuts. Mind you, a manual cable from Paragon is $35-40. So I said thanks, but I'll see what I can rig up.
Swung by the hardware store on the way home and picked up some small (maybe 1/16"?) aluminum crimp-on ferrules. I cross-drilled one and threaded it onto the cable, after feeding the cable from the pedal up to the throttle cam. Crimped that into place, then fed the cable back through the cable guide (greased the whole thing, of course) to the trans.
At the trans end, I crimped on the other ferrule, using it to splice the end of the old cable (with the threaded end still attached) onto the new cable at the appropriate length. I did this very close to the ball end, to make sure it wouldn't hit the cable guide when the accelerator was floored.
Now it works as good as new, and for $1.00, not $100! _________________ Vaughan Scott
