hi everyone, i drive my porsche everyday, take it everywhere, never gives up on me. but what i really dont like it, is the gas consumption. its unbeleivable! i watch the gauge after just driving to school and back(7 miles total), and the needle jumped almost half an inch. sometimes ill park the car when the needle is halfway on the line, and start the car the next day, and the needle dropped alot. now how did that happen? could it just be the my gauge is reading wrong or too fast? or my car is just a gas killer? if u live here in california, you will feel me. gas is $3 a gallon, i pump 87 _________________ 80' Porsche 924 NA - Slower then a S L O W

Could be just the gauge. Mine is very dodgy.
The easiest way to tell is by how often you have to fill it. Just note how many miles you do between filling then note how much gas you put in each time you fill up. That will give you a rough miles-per-gallon number. If your mileage is reasonable, then it's probably just your gauge that is stuffed. This is what I found on my car.
If your mileage is very poor, then it could be any number of problems, from a fuel leak to bad tuning, etc... _________________ '80 924 Turbo |

I use "98 octane" BP Ultimate.
But apparently our numbers have a different meaning to yours. I think your equivalent is 93 or something.

Apparently yes. But I'm no guru so can't say why. I think the basic theory is that the better the fuel, the more power you get per unit. But how it all works out is beyond me.
I just have a sticker that says use 98 octane, so I do.
BTW, our gas hit nearly US$4/gallon recently, so stop complaining _________________ '80 924 Turbo |

sounds to me that you have a leak. possibly on the fuel tank, or fuel lines...
i could be wrong, but if the gauge drops when you're not even driving it! _________________ 1998 BMW Z3 2.8 arctic silver & red

I'm a hermit in the mountains and the only thing that I use fuel in these days is my ATV, it doesn't drink much. _________________ Ryan Moone

Don't worry, ours is heading that way, double-time...
| seanski44 wrote: | | sounds to me that you have a leak. possibly on the fuel tank, or fuel lines... |
Methinks not, mainly 'cause raw fuel really stinks... I'd reckon if 924er had a leak he'd be complaining about a strong fuel smell.
If you park these cars on an incline (like most others) the petrol moving towards the front/back of the tank can cause a high/low reading. Then when you get on level road again, the gauge will move up/down accordingly.
Your driveway isn't on an incline by any chance, 924er?
| 924er wrote: | | how many miles do you guys do on a full tank? |
Usually well over 300 miles out of my 15-odd gallon tank. But mine's a Turbo. Yours should be a fair bit better than that... I've heard up to 450 miles per tank for an NA. _________________ '80 924 Turbo |

Our fuel in New Zealand has just taken a big hike -we had a 6 cent per litre rise last week and then another this week. We're currently paying NZ$1.73 per litre think this works out to about US$4.00 a gallon.
It's certainly seems to be hitting people here I've noticed over the last couple of days that there are more car parks available in town and more people standing and bus and train stops.
Doesn't really affect me as I only use the 924 GT in the weekends and I run it on Avgas which I buy by teh 44 gal drum and it doesn't seem to have moved as much as pump gas. Also during the week I use a LPG powered 4 x 4 - LPG works out at about US$1.70 gallon _________________ Remember a Porsche is not just for Christmas,

yes khal, my driveway is inclined, and drops everyime i park there, but doesnt straighten out when i get back on the road. so could be a broken gauge.
so if the meter is broken, should i trust the light. or do they work together?? _________________ 80' Porsche 924 NA - Slower then a S L O W
