|
|
Hi,
I'm looking for a daily driver and am looking at Porsche's older cars. Are there any Porsche's that get better gas mileage for city driving than the 924? I know that the 924's gas mileage was pretty impressive and was just assuming that it was the best.
Secondly, what was the last year that the Porsche 924 (Non-turbo) was made?
Thanks. |

Hi there. As for gas mileage, the 924 must be the best Porsche for that. Also, if saving cash is your concern, get a well maintained car, it can save thousands. The last year the 924 NA {non turbo} was made for the US was 1983. The Euro's had them until '86 I think. There are 924S's and they went untill 1988 {only a few '88's compared to other years for the 924}.
Anything else?

Yep, agree with Neil924.
The NA 924 in good working condition must surely be the most economical Porsche.
Fuel consumption in any car goes up and down. So on any given day one car might use less than another. But on the whole, I'd say the 924 has the others beat.
I've never dropped below 22mpg that I've measured, even with some hard driving stints thrown in. And mine's an '81 Turbo, probably less economical than the NA 924... _________________ '80 924 Turbo |

My 1970 1.7 914 always got between 25 and 32 mpg on regular gas. _________________ White 87 924S "Ghost"

Damn, I was hoping they would have made them sooner. My parents don't want me to get an older car because they say people have driven the crap out of them... |

U.S. market 924 cars only to 82 model year. Some private imports up to the 85 model year. Last year 924 was manufacturered with the 2.0L engine was 85. 924S with 2.5L was world product from 86-88, and U.S. model from 87-88.
Best gas mileage 924 would be the earlier model years. My early 77 924 got over 35 MPG on the run from LA to SF all the time (average was 27-28 on my daily runs to downtown LA, a 130 round trip).
My 81 924 which is in better overall condition than my 77 ever was never goes above 28-30 mpg (averages 25), but it's a better made and running car.
This matches the best I ever got from my 73 914 2.0 on the same run (about 35 mpg). |

How 'bout a 968? It'll cost you about as much as a good late model Honda.
Of course, the first time your dad gets that timing belt bill, you'll be working three jobs to pay him back.
If you're still under your parents roof, why not get what they want you to get. Then, when you're out on your own, you can pick up what you want. _________________ '80 924 n/a SOLD |

A 968 unfortunately doesn't get good enough gas mileage... |

well to me all the front engine 4cyl porsches get good mpg especially for a sportscar. Only the v8 928 gets pretty bad mpg in the city.
a 924 with an old high milliage engine also won't be getting the same mpg it used to get 30 years ago. _________________ 78 924 sold.

You got that right.. I would kill for 28mph on the highway...
Hell I can burn a quarter tank of gas just merging onto the highway... _________________ [This Space For Rent] |

My 924 NA gets about 30mpg.
The 931 will get a bit less- just over 20 according to Khal. _________________ Porsche 924 1984 (UK import) NA

So what are you waiting for? Get a 924.
Go for a decent one (the trick is being able to tell) and it shouldn't cost any more to maintain than a ten year old BMW, say, probably less. A it's a whole lot cooler! _________________ 1985 Porsche 924 'Lux', Kalahari Beige (my ex)

| 88 (24S never seems to top 21 mpg) Has same 160 HP engine as 944. 1988 was the only year they made them like that I believe. |
