Hi Everyone...
Ok... there is a bad rattle from under the car when driving (making it tough to diagnose). Recently, I noticed that when sitting still if I shake the shift lever I can hear the rattle from under the car.
Any ideas? _________________ -Stu

When you hear a rattle coming from underneath the car, it's usually the exhaust.
Other than that, heat shielding maybe? There are a few braces and brackets bolted to the body above the exhaust, check and see if any of them are loose... _________________ '81 931 in various states of assembly |

I second the exhuast noise. When the car is cold try banging on the catalytic converter with your fist if you have one (cat not fist). If it rattles that will be the problem. _________________ '84 944

Noise is defintely coming out of the exhaust but everything with the exhaust looks fine and I can't get it to make the noise by hitting it.
Do you suspect something broken inside the cat? _________________ -Stu

Whe under the car hit the gear shift extension about half way down the length, if the rattle occurs then its the guide tube taht goes through the top of the transmission to the shift pivot lever.
The other thing it could be is the rivot in the transmission wiring cable guide...
it's the little ring that the wiring runs through and it's located about half way down the torque tube just above it. These get loose over time and start rattling. I know cause I've fixed one and it took me ages to find. Take a long screwdriver out and give the rivot a good tap with a mallet on the end of the screwdriver, that should shut it up.
I tried liquid nails first but it didn't really work that well, the screwdriver worked a treat, but that's cause I got fed up with it as I was doing starter motor wiring at the time and I hate that job with a passion .

Ok.. just swapped the cars.. 924S out of the shop after a major tune up and the 924 in until it once again runs in stealth mode
Just waiting on the call from my mechanic .....
(For those who want to know why 924 vs 924S, just go to any parts web site and take a look at the prices for tune-up parts for each car).

Going to be in the shop for awhile...
Noise is the clutch throw out bearing... the original clutch has finally seen the end of it's life....
Thank goodness I have all the clutch parts sitting in the garage.... although labor will definitely be the bigger expense.... _________________ -Stu

Finally out of the shop and its like driving a different car. With the clutch near the end of its life the clutch pedal was really stiff (to the point you didn't want to hold it down when stopped). Now, it's got some play back and is really easy on the old foot.
For those curious, the cost of the clutch job was close to $700 using my parts that I got from another member some time ago in anticipation of this...
All noises gone and the car is once again running like a champ...
On the downside...
The jeep had to go in for maintenance and the wife has the 924S so the upgrades/repairs to that are still on hold _________________ -Stu
