Just wondering what model porsche is the best deal right now. I think the boxster is the best deal right now you can get them as cheap as 20 grand canadian and they are pretty quick and are newer. I heard they handle better than the 911 alos. the bad thing about the boxster is that they are all convertibles I think and they remind me of a miata or other chick car. they would probably look better if they weren't convertibles.
just wondering what other people think.
Not talking about best deals, my favourite (or one of my fav) porsche is the 993 Carrera from the mid 90s. _________________ 78 924 sold.

Yeah, I've heard they're quite a deal if you want a car you don't plan to mess with. OTOH if you are planning on playing a bit under the hood, I suspect (haven't been playing close attention) that it's still hard to beat the grins per dollar factor on a 951!
Another great buy I've been hearing about (getting off the P-cars) is the C5 Z06's... not so hot now that the C6 is out, but still a helluva car, and apparently also going in the $20's... _________________ Vaughan Scott

But I'm not sure you'll find a C5 Z06 to retail in the 20's, upper end at wholesale, but retail will still put you in the low 30's - even for a 2003 Z06:

I see tons of Boxters here in the Chicagoland area - no doubt it is a very popular car for the "I just need to be seen in Porsche" crowd. They all look stock, they all are silver, and they all turn heads.
Personally, I don't like any of the Porsche convertibles - the lines just don't look natural. If your question is strictly based on money, the the Boxter is the best deal. But if you factor in everything else, I think you get the most out of a two or three year old 996. For the price of a brand knew Boxster, you should be able to find a decent 996 - thats a well rounded deal.
But, at 6'4'', I've never liked convertibles - something has ALWAYS hit me in the head when motoring down the road with the top down.

The 968 is the best deal. What a car... A low mileage '95 in excellent condition should run you around $15K, and you get a lot for that $15K. The 968 has 240hp compared to the Boxster's 200, you get a 6 speed as opposed to a 5 speed, and the ease of maintenance that comes with the 924/944/968 line. If you take your time and find one with the M030 package, you get incredible performance, and they just look that much better than the Boxster. Also, you get your choice of coupe or cabrio.
The article I lifted those pics from

No kidding?!? Wow! That is a hella good deal... though I'd personally be leery of the 6-speeds, given the diff bearing concern... _________________ Vaughan Scott

I have two friends with 2001 Boxsters. They where starting to get the "my Boxster is better than your 944" attitude one night. Had to bust thier bubble and gave them the facts that the 951, 944S2, 968 actually have more HP, etc. and let him know the Boxster is the modern day entry level Porsche, just as the 924/944 line was in the past. Not that makes them bad, just honest.
Not convinced that a S2 was actaully faster, we lined them up. The Boxster got smoked...
Not sure how they compare on the track? Anyone know?
Both are great cars. I don't care for cabrios as well. I think that's why the Cayman was released. |

thats what I thought too - that the Cayman was the hard top counterpart to the Boxster. But then, some posts mentioned that there was a Cayman covertible coming out - or was that all sarcasm that I missed?

Vaughan, this is cracking me up cuz I can see truth in the post, but I can also see the sarcasm - damn I feel so naive.

LOL! I recommend you read all of the sniffpetrol site - current month and in the archives. Effin' Hilarious, IMO... like The Onion meets the automotive world, with a healthy dose of British humour... _________________ Vaughan Scott

I have had a Boxster since 99, it's not a bad car, but not my favorite. The main reason I bought it was to have a convertable in the summer. I think the handling and performance are very compairable to a 944 turbo. To work on is very hard, if you like to turn wrenches this is not the car for you it is the only Porsche I have owned that I have to take to the dealer for service (makes me sick to think about it). Overall: Good, fun summer car for the money. _________________ 1998 Boxster

the 968 is my favourite front engine porsche. I've seen them at around 25 grand canadian.... so they are basicly the same price as a old boxster.
the 968 is also probably more expensive to maintain at a mechanic shop because they are pretty rare but boxsters are everywhere.
the boxster is really a modern 914-6 _________________ 78 924 sold.

The best deal on a Porsche right now IMO is a 924S.
I have a 01 Boxster that I have driven 49,000 miles including driving to the last 5 Porsche Parades (Milwaukee, Boise, Tampa, Fort Worth, and Hershey). If you're thinking about a Boxster, don't buy anything earlier than a 2000 due to various motor issues. _________________ White 87 924S "Ghost"
