That's great!
It's the old story... if it had have been born a Toyota instead of a Porsche it'd be making Top Ten Most Influential Cars of All Time lists to this day. _________________ '80 924 Turbo |

I couldn't agree more.
It's funny; people tell me all the time I don't drive a 'proper' Porsche, it's really an Audi, it a parts bin car, doesn't deserve to wear the Porsche shield.
I think what they really mean is: it's not a 911. The strange thing is that I've never had this from 911 drivers; I only get from people who've never owned or even driven a Porsche in their lives! _________________ 1985 Porsche 924 'Lux', Kalahari Beige (my ex)

Those of us not in the 911 world call it NARP syndrome.
Apparently since it was designed by Porsche, produced under a joint venture with Porsche and another company and sold through Porsche dealerships, it's still not a 911.
But bring up the 356 or 550... WOAH now, those are real Porsches! |

Pfffft.
The 924 (ROW) doesn't compare that bad with other popular "entry level" sports cars even today, like the Miata or MGF. And she a much better looking car and ... much more rare.
Even the Beetle is a Porsche design, which many forgets. Which means that VW is a true child of Porsche.....
Beetle -> 356 -> 911
924 -> 944 -> 968
Has Porsche ever made a car which has no connection whatsoever with VW?
I'm not even going to dignify them with my response. |

This is what a lot of people overlook: Even the vaunted 911 has it's design roots in the humble Beetle.

928 comes closest, IMO. Although it was released after the 924, it was actually designed before the Porsche/VW/Audi collaberation that led to the 924. _________________ 1985 Porsche 924 'Lux', Kalahari Beige (my ex)

Let'em rag...................it just means more 924's for the rest of us! Where else can you buy such superb handling, great looks, decent performance and fuel efficiency to boot for under 2 grand? If the car was so bad, then why have so many automakers tried to copy it's design? Porsche broke the mold with it's classic wedge shaped design which is one of the things I admire most about the company. They're not afraid to venture into unproven territory. The car meets all the major design criteria of form, fit and function even to this day. You have to remember the car was designed in the midst of a worldwide oil crunch. Porsche needed a car that was fuel efficient AND remained competitive....................a not so easy task. The 924 was the PERFECT answer! Sure, the 924 had it's problems, but I applaud Porsche's efforts to tackle ALL of the design criteria in one vehicle. No one else had the answer. The technology was not there yet, but that didn't stop Porsche. R&D is not cheap. With the 924, Porsche set in motion a design approach that would pave the way in the automotive industry for generations to come. Success breeds envy. _________________ 1981 931 (Concours)

Not cause a riff here Tigger but the Datsan 240Z was a few years ahead of the 924's shape. And Ferrari may have been ahead of the 240Z with that shape. And they certainly didn't break the mold with the 924. They used it for the 928, 944 & 968. _________________ 79 924 Sebring |

yeah I think most people have a negative image of the 924 and even the 944/928 or maybe they confuse them.
most people who see my car ask if its a 944 and then I tell them no its a 924 and then they say things like I've heard those cars are a pain to work on or they are huge money pits.
who cares if its a porsche or not, it depends what you think a porsche is.
to most people only the 911 is a porsche. Like my dad doesn't consider the boxster a real porsche. Alot of people also don't consider the 944 a real porsche because its front engine, 4 cyl and water cooled.
Even the 928 which is made my porsche, some people think its just a german corvette and not a porsche.
kinof like the ferrari Dino, it was made and designed by ferrari but people don't consider it a real ferrari because its a 6 cylinder and not a v12. ferrari didn't even put a ferrari badge on it just a "Dino" badge because they were scared it would ruin the image of the v12 cars. _________________ 78 924 sold.

I think it has more to do with the people who drive 911s than anything else, I have a feeling that most of the people who hate any Porsche except 911/356/550 are the people who go to the dealer for a $50 oil change. I think they are probably one of the most influencial reasons behind me not wanting a 911 has much as a 550 kit car, even though the 911 wold be about half the price and many times faster.
What do the people who have Boxsters think about it? do they even have a board?? _________________ 1987 924S Guards Red

I think your $50 oil change estimate is very low. A dealer oil change for a new 3 series BMW is $120. _________________ 1987 951 - M193 Version for Japan |

Depends...what day is it?
SoCal likes to bait anyone he can. He has very little knowledge on the 924 and what he doesn't understand, he must treat with derision. It's the only way he can feel good about owning his 911 money pit.
It's kinda' sad but I think he hangs most of his personality on the fact that he owns a 911. Without it, he'd just be another run-of-the-mill ass instead of a "special" ass. _________________ '80 924 n/a SOLD |
