I have had an Audi 5000TD for years, but when it has stayed parked in the shop for the last 5 or so. Couldn't figure out why I didn't drive it until I gave it some serious thought, and the reason is it is an automatic. I HATE automatic anything.

From PAB's posts many months ago, it started to bother me that nobody was doing this engine in 924, since it is nearly a straigh bolt in (as much as any swap can be). So, when a fellow racer bought a 1980 NA converted to 931 wheels and brakes, and just couldn't tolerate the fuss of fixing up a beater (with a sound body!), he passed it along to me for $1,200 complete with a set of 14" Fuchs magnesium 5 spokes thrown in. How could I resist?

The Audi starts life with 85 HP, considerably less than the 115 of the 924, but I can easily bump this over 100. It also runs into the governor around 4,600, which I can bump a bit as well, but 5th is so tall that I will run out of horsepower long before I run out of revs.

Any thoughts or comments will be most welcome. I will be busy out of town for a couple of months, so I have lots of time to plan and scroung bits before it gets into the shop.

Pat

From what I've seen others do and experience, there may be gearing issues but it would be a tough old car/interesting. Do it!

The gearing is as close to perfect as you could get. At governor speed (which can be changed VERY easily) the stock pump will allow about 125 mph in 5th - about what I estimate top speed to be power limited anyway.

BTW, I met the former owner of this car at a big autocross this weekend. He was delighted to hear about the swap (everyone in our club and for several clubs around has raved at the idea). The car is a former deep south US car, absolutely no rust. It is also non-sunroof. The 931 wheels and brakes are factory (M471?) so it ran as stock in this configuration. It will be a mod car when the engine is in, but due to the uniqueness of the car, I will be treating it as a permanent project, rather than just a prototype.
