81 924 was running great and just quit. Like someone unplugged it. No back fires just stopped. It turns over fine but does not fire. I took out a spark plug to see if it was in fact sparking and although there was a spark it seemed very week and eratic.
Could it be the coil?
any help would be appreciated. |

check timing timing belt, the belt is what essentially controls the time at which the spark fires. |

Is that all that controls timing?
No Motronic on the older 924? |

Similar thing happened to my 1982 924. Driving along and the car would just shut off. It would then restart after a short time. Time varried... anyway.
Replaced the fuel pump relay and the car was fine for about 8 weeks. The car died again and would not restart. This time I had the ECU (what ever it is called on 924) the coil and another new fuel pump relay. The problem never returned. You could guess what is wrong and replace one part at a time, or get it over with and replace all three.
Good luck

Oh forgot to note that you should check the little things first of course. Like cap and rotor and timing and condition of wires and spark plugs. Then I would assume it could be the same issue I had. Normally when it just quits it is some thing electronic just shutting down the fuel.

I had a similar problem on my '87 924S. It just quit running, and when it was dead, it had no spark. But I think the emissions/fuel injection systems might be different, so what fixed mine (the ECU) may not fix yours. And since you think that spark might be the problem, I don't think I'd fool around with the fuel pump or relay. |

I had the same problem with my '82 924, and it was a fault cable on the fuel pump fuse. |

Check:
Distributor
Spark(you could get a pen like device with which you touch the wire and it will light up if you have voltage)
THERMOSTAT! if you overheated you car (and we all have) the thermostat can stay open, if open, car will have very hard time starting, had this problem in my porsche and altima... |

I had the exact same problem on my 87 'S. On callout the mechanic reckoned it was the fuel pump that had ceased, but that is apparently very unlikely on these cars. My specialist replaced the Fuel Pump relay which cured the problem! |

The same thing happened to me 3 days ago. AAA towed me home and it started the next day. I took off for a test drive and it died 1/2 way up the driveway.
No spark at all. I unplugged and cleaned any wire connection that I thought had anythig to do with the ignition. I unplugged and cleaned the ECU behind the console. I pulled the dist cap and cleaned in there too. I unbolted the terminals from the coil and cleaned there. I noted a good amount of oxidation there. It started right up and ran pretty good. Give it a try. Good luck. |
