I have a highly modified 944T, a 924S and a 928S4. However, my favorite car of the three is the 924S. I am six inches too tall for the 928 and I went overboard on the 944T modifications making the car impractical for my daily stop and go commute.
My 924S (1987) runs great but is gutless wonder compared to the other two cars and I would like a little more.
How difficult would it be to install a 2.7L motor from a 1989 944? Based on what I have read, the only difference is that the block has a bore of 104mm and the head has different ducts for engine coolant.
Before installing the new engine I would have it rebuilt and:
- Lighten, knife-edge and balance the crank
- Upgrade the rods
- Increase compression from 10.9:1 to 11.5:1 (if I can find the pistons)
- Mildly port the head and intake manifold
- Install aluminum flywheel and high performance clutch
- Remove the catalytic converter and upgrade the exhaust
- Use 1989 944 aftermarket chip
Also considering stroking the motor to 3.0L using a crank from an s2 since the rods and pistons will have to be replaced anyway.
My guess is that this would be a very easy replacement. Thoughts?
Has anyone done this? Any surprises?
Does anyone have a guess what the performance would be? (Stock 2.7L had 162hp, 140 ft-lbs torque)
In the end this car needs to be utterly reliable and able to do well in 2 hours a day stop and go traffic. I don't want any more maintence than I have with the stock/chipped motor. |

Over here, they say the 2,7 was a bad engine, not to recommend.. Think instead of a 2,5S or a 3 liter? What about a 951 motor? _________________ Sveina

this wouldnt be overly hard, the engine should bolt right in, however you will need the wiring harness and computer as they will be different. but the engine should pretty much just bolt right up.
in regards to the comment on the 2.7L engine, they say the 911 2.7L engine is bad due to the fact that the crankcase was just bored and bored more and more from the origonal 2.0L engine the 911 had and it was just overdone and at the 70,000mile mark the head bolts would just tear the case apart from pressure and there went the entire motor, that is why there are VERY few companies which rebuild those with success as you really have to fix the bolt holes on the crankcase, and those that do fix it and are successful dont let the secret out. but keep in mind that this was the engine the 911 Carrera RS used. _________________ 3 928s, |

couldn't you run into trouble with the stock transmission? _________________ 1987 924S Guards Red

I have heard only good things about the 89 2.7L. It has 15hp over the stock 2.5L engine but a much more aggressive torque curve (hotter cam, bigger intake valves and more compression)
The longblock that I am considering does not come with the 89 computer and wiring harness. What happens if I stay with the stock 924S computer?
If I limit the modifications to the 2.7L to only the aluminum flywheel and clutch, shouldn't the stock transmission be sufficient? Doesn't the 924S use the same transmission as the 924 turbo and 944? One version of the 924 turbo came with 170hp. |
