|
|
It appears that the lights on the left side of my speedometer are burned out, if I were going 90 -160 I would be able to see the needle, but unable to see it at 0 -60. What is the easiest way to get at the little light bulbs? Sledge hammer is not an option - yet!
All the other lights in the instrument panel appear to be working and are actually fairly bright when the dimmer switch is turned up. _________________ 79 924 NA |

Reach underneath the dash and push the tach out, requires a fair amount of force to push it out. Disconnect the wiring from the tach and lay the gauge aside. Now, reach behind the speedometer through the hole where the tach was and unscrew the speedometer cable from the back of the speedo gauge. Once the speedo cable is unscrewed, you can push out the speedo just like you did with the tach. The bulb housings are just press fitted into the back of the gauge, you pull out the housings to get access to the bulb. _________________ 1987 951 - M193 Version for Japan |

They do require quite a bit of force to push out. A little jimmying up and down while you push helps.
Also, when you're putting it back in, be sure not to hork up the rubber piece that wraps around the gauge (just behind the face)...that's what keeps the gauges from bouncing around while you drive. Ask me how I know. _________________ erstwhile owner of just about every 924 variant ever made |

...just to be clear
When you're pushing, as you sit in the driver's seat, you're pushing TOWARDS yourself from the back, with your hands behind the dash... |

Yep. The easiest way to get at it is to put the driver seat all the way back, and recline it as far as it will go. Then stick your head down by the pedals with your feet up on the driver seat...it's not as uncomfortable as you might think. Take a light with you. Stick your hand up there and start pushing the tach toward the driver seat. Once you have the tach out, sit back upright in the driver seat and do what Chrenan said. _________________ erstwhile owner of just about every 924 variant ever made |

Thanks, as that is what I read in the Haynes manual, only thing is mine has what appears to be a bezel (cover) over the gages. This bezel is held in place by two screws that screw into the top of the dash. The bezel has 3 clear plastic cones (1 for each gage) and the gages are set behind these cones. I unscrewed the bezel and was able to pull all three gages out about an 1-2 inches, but no further. If I were to just reach up and push the Tach, it would hit the plastic cone and stop -I think?
Does anyone understand what I am saying? Or do I have some unusual dash?
thanks for your help _________________ 79 924 NA |

Leave the bezel and the screws in place. The gauges pop out of the bezel. _________________ erstwhile owner of just about every 924 variant ever made |

The clear plastic cones are attached to the gauges and will come out with the gauges when you push the gauge from behind. _________________ 1987 951 - M193 Version for Japan |

Thanks, as I was driving home from work I got to thinking about it and thought the lens might come out with the gages. I will try it out over the weekend. Not tonight - bonding time with the wife & a Captain Morgan.
Thanks again _________________ 79 924 NA |

If you don't drop it below 90, do you really need to replace the lights? |
