Guy´s I need your help with these one. I was driving my 1981 931 when I stop for a red light. When the green light I tried to re-engage first gear but It was very difficult, the only gear that i could engage was 2 and 3. I drove my car figting with the gear´s when suddenly the lever get loose, and the secon gear engaged.
I know the gearbox is OK, because once the gear was in it´s place it run´s fine.
My porsche has the 016-z 5 speed type.
It feels to me that the shift coupling between the transmission and the selector rod has broken, but there´s no way to reach that point without taking the driveshaft out.
Can the driveshaft be taken out without taking the tranny out?? Do you know any other thing that could be instead of the shift coupling??
Please help me , with these...

A 16-z in an 81? Well stranger things have happened. If it is the 16-z you have 2 shift rods, one connected to the shifter then to the gearbox, and then one connected to the shifter and then to the torque tube, either a coned bolt came loose on the rod connected to the gearbox, (at the shift coupler) or the other rod sits on a ball socket and may have popped off.

To my knowledge you cant remove the torque tube without taking out the transaxle. So be prepared to try and find the problem blind or remove the drive line.

What should I remove to check this??
Removing the drive shaft would be OK? Is really a need to remove the tranny for this?

You can check from the interior, just remove the shift knob and boot and check which rod is loose. You might be lucky and only have had a clip come off on the base of the shift lever.

Try to grab each rod and push it back and forth. If the rod on the passenger side (right) moves back and forth its come off the ball socket. If its fine the cone bolt in your shift coupler could have come loose. If it's neither of those your going to have to drop the drive line. If it is a 16-z you can bring the transaxle and torque tube as one unit you might have to loosen the rear suspension though, then pull it out from the rear. And your sure its a 16-z and not the Audi transaxle?

If what say´s in the haynes is true, yes it´s an 16-z, is the one with the first gear below the reverse.

Hey guys remember that they continued using the 016/Z in the European turbos. Only the US/Canada/Japanese turbos got the 016/G.

My 931 is US I think, the porsche´s that used to come to Argentina in those day´s were the same that goe´s to the state´s. Is there anyway of being really sure about these??
It has the rubber bunmper. and all the emission control stuff, so I supose is the US one.

Do you know the transmission's serial number?

The Tech Specs booklet shows these transmissions for 924 Turbos -
G31/01 (5 speed) Europe/RoW 924 Turbo 79-84
G31/02 (5 speed) USA/Japan 924 Turbo up to 1980
016G MB (5 speed) USA 81-82
016G MX (5 speed) Japan 81-82

It shows the following 13 went into 924 NA's:
088/6 YR (4 speed) Europe/RoW 78-79
088/A XT (4 speed) USA/Japan 78-79
016Z VA (5 speed) Europe/RoW 78-79
016Y VB (5 speed) USA 78-79
016/8 VQ (5 speed) Europe/RoW 80
016/9 VR (5 speed) USA/Japan 80
016/8 MD (5 speed) Europe/RoW from 81
016/8 4Q (5 speed) Europe/RoW 82 (with lock)
016/9 MF (5 speed) USA from 81
016/9 5Q (5 speed) USA/Japan 82 (with lock)
016/9 ME (5 speed) Japan from 81
087/3 RK (Automatic) Europe/RoW from 78

Concerning the chassis VIN - A 1981-82 924 Turbo made for Europe/RoW(Rest of the World) should start with: "WP0 ZZZ 93 Z BN 10nnnn".
One for USA/Canada/Japan should start with: "WP0 AA0 93 0 CN 15nnnn".
For Italy 1982-84: "WP0 ZZZ 93 Z DN 10nnnn"

hold down left mouse button , slide arrow up the page and highlite all the text , right click any highlited area ,then left click copy , then go to where you want to put it and right click ,then left click paste,all the text you highlited will be pasted on the new page.
