Buy or borrow an "advance" timing light. Will allow you to test total advance, and with the lines disconnected, mechanical advance.

You might try some lubrication. Mine made a horrible squall, but with the air flap open I was able to hit it with teflon bike chain lube and it hasn't made a peep since.

We replaced with twisted pair, about as good for shielding for EM interference...

Where did you splice? Where did you obtain the twisted pair wire? Gauge?
