The $1,500 they want to do it properly is worth it to me just for the time it allows me to go out and do other stuff or work on ...

Holy friggin crap man that is clean. I've been looking under 924 hoods for over 20 years now and that still took me a few minutes to sort out stock vs. non stock parts.

You find a replacement head, they are cheap and plentiful. Welding unknown aluminum that has been heat cycled and impregnated with oil over the last 40 years is sketchy at best.
