The $1,500 they want to do it properly is worth it to me just for the time it allows me to go out and do other stuff or work on ... |

You find a replacement head, they are cheap and plentiful. Welding unknown aluminum that has been heat cycled and impregnated with oil over the last 40 years is sketchy at best.
